speed limiter removal

I recently tried to remove my speed limiter on my 99' max, i followed the directions and when i got to the cuting part i found the pink wire with the blue stripe and it was on the right side whee it said it would be. Instead of just cuting the wire i added a switch in to the so that i wouldn't always have the check engine light. My prob is when i opened the circut which should have the same effect as cuting the wire i didn't get a check engine light and the worst part my car stoped at 120.

Here is what is really strange, i think i remeber that it used to top out at 115. But i know that my car was not goin as fast as could cause u could feel the suden jerk of the fuel shut off. I heard that if u have a speed limiter it would completely shut down. But i know mine has one cause it is the base model.

Maybe the whole 115/120 thing was just a variation but if it was what did i cut!!! thats a scary thought. Anyone know if it is b/c i have a 99'?

Thanx - - matt

first of all, do you have a SE, GLE, or GXE?

i am almost 100% sure it is an GXE...

Black guage faces
Cloth seats
Basic stereo
no sunroof
Chrome outer window trim and door handles
5spd
No spoiler
No fog lights
Steel wheels with hubcaps
Chrome grill on 97-99 models
Manual A/C

i was told that the GXE had the speed limiter b/c it didn't fave tires rated to go above 120.

okie yes you have a GXE. what kinda switch are you using? is it normally closed or open?

if it's normally open = removed speed limiter
if it's norcally closed = speed limiter on

i suggest just try to cut the wire itself and see if the CEL light goes on. if it does then drive 120+mph and make sure it works.

if you passed that step, now wire it to a switch and see if it still works.

You did disable your limiter. However, your car is not in a good enough state of tune to exceed 120mph.

maybe, but would it be an abrupt stop of acceleration? I figured if it really was toped out that it would slowly come up to topspeed.

happyricefob - it is just a small switch that i pulled off some old electronics. I'm not sure what you would call it, it basicaly has three pins with a plate that conectes two of the three. when you slide it it selects the middle pin and one of the out side pins. So when it it is open (mid pin and empty pin) it is like being cut. When it is closed (mid pin an wire to the ecu) it is like being together.

sry this is kinda hard to explain - i'm going to try an just cut it an see if there is a diff. Its kinda hard to test cause i can't just drive down my street at 140 lol.

happyricefob is refering to a momentary switch. Your choice is OK.
