If you look at your gas tank door where the gas cap is, it says for better performance use premium gasoline. Maxima engine is designed for higher grade gas, not the cheap gas(87).... you should use 91-93 ocatne gas. Your engine is probably knocking and pinging at this point. You can hear it from out side.

Just use premium, idk why people think its so much more. At most it's 10 Cents more per gallon (here anyways) I usuallly put in about 8-10 gallons when I go to the gas station. So it's less then a dollar to have you car run how its supposed to.
Considering I have pay $160 a MONTH for insurance, $1 more for gas isnt alot.

Are you throwing a CEL?

run 87 octane all the time in my max
I know it goes against the manual but up here in Canada, 91 octane is 10 cents more a litre = 40 cents a gallon = $5.00+ a tank. Since my driving is mainly hiway, I dont see a real advantage or requirement for the hi octane fuel, my car runs great on the lo test, no pinging or hesitation and it is at 171,000 km, 99 gle.

87 octane gas is FINE for our cars. 95% of maxima owners use it with ZERO problems. The problems everyone on this board has with 87 is one of the two:
1) they're **** and will think any problem they have is related to 87.
2) the get a bad batch of gas (excess water) and blame it on the octane.
Run a can of dry gas through your tank and I bet you your problems will be solved even still running 87.

I bought the car a few moths ago and i've always used 91+ octane, i just started it and got the roughness like it was de-tuned or retarded in timing. When the car acyed like this i just assumed it was a low octane issue, possibly tanks were mixed up @ Sam's club here..not sure. Today the check engine light did come on. Just did a tune up 4k miles ago as well as changing all fluids. Still trouble shooting.

I would never use 87, but if you are trying to save a buck on everyday driving, at least use some injector cleaner regularly with that 87 cause the octane is not strong enough to keep your injectors from clogging. Stick to 93+ though...the extra change per fill-up is more than worth it.

The more expensive gas gets, the less significant $0.10/gallon is. There's not that much of a difference between paying $1.80 and $1.90 per gallon.
If you get better mileage out of the better gas, it's partly paying for itself.
Good Luck!

again, I really wish everyone would read the following article before shooting BS out their cracks:
http://www.seansa4page.com/resource/octane.html
Read it from top to bottom and THEN you can post about what you think our engines should run on.
