The shifter's not to high, the console is low. I believe the center console on the Supra is "higher" on your seated body. It's just been my experience, and if you think about it probably yours, that the top of a gear shift is at a height where if you arm is on the armrest or at an approx. right angle your hand rests right on top of the shifter. I belive this is where using the shifter is most comfortable for the masses. You can shorten your shifter for looks. It will just feel a little different to shift it.

There are a few I've seen.
The Razo (I believe the one you're talking about)
brown wood grain

black/gray wood grain
http://216.82.69.117/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=RA-105
the Levoc

and the one on custom maxima (which looks like a chrome Razo, maybe? not sure what brand it is)

I don't think an auto shifter that low would really look right on a max though. On a 300M/Intrepid, it kinda flows with the rest of the interior, but a max's dash is way too angular (DIN's, climate control, etc) compared to the Dodge for that.

It isn't too hard to install the aftermarket shifter. If you try to use the stock holes with the aftermarket shifter you'd have a really ugly tall beast, like a truck shifter or something. I hacked off about 1.5" from the metal pipe inside the stock shifter, drilled a new 1/8" hole inside that pipe, shortened the inside spring release rod (don't know if you guys know what im talkin about- its is the thin piece of metal seen in the pic below), and now the shifter is sitting a lower than the oem or an aftermarket that isn't sawed.
I went to Kragen and borrowed their pipe cutter for free, and although it was too big, I just took my time and made a lot of small cuts until it finally fell off. The metal rod inside was pretty easily cut with a wirecutter.
I'd imagine it would be possible to shorten the stock shifter, but you will have to hack it on the bottom, and find a way to re-solder the od switch wires and reattach them. You could probably cut down like 2-3"... I'd pick up that spare stock shifter and play around with it and find out.
P.S. I don't recommend the Levoc, the chrome part on mine is chipping off. I've had it about 3+ years.
