98 SE, thermostat defective, had it replaced, but now the cooling fans will not turn on. If i manually spin the fans while the car is running, it will eventually start to run on its own, its like it wants to run but can't. Maybe the fans need replacing?

Does the car overheat if you just let it idle for long enough?
The fans should come on when you turn on the AC compressor, do they?

 

i have that problem too, the fans never turn on, not even with the AC on

 

Initially the fans would not turn on at all, even with AC on. But it would not overheat, the temp gauge stays in the middle. I replaced the relays for #1 and #2 and it started working ( I think). Standing in front of the car, the fan on the left comes on when the AC is turned on now. Is the one on the right supposed work as well? Does anyone know what relay #3 does?

 

Relay 3 is for the high speed setting. Comes on if the car gets up to 221 degrees. The fan (s) run faster for better cooling. I would hook the fan motors up directly to a 12volt source and see if they come on if not the motor is bad.
