i have a98 SE auto. The best i have is 300 mile (all highway) with a full tank. And it is a 15 gallon tank. With day-to-day driving, i can only get 220-240 miles. i wonder how's other maxima do? From the spec. it said 21mpg (city), and 28mpg (highway). It seem like i am way off. Never get that even when the car was new.

I'm trying something new..I have to fill up every friday...And I drive about the same amount everyweek (some highway some city)I'm trying every brand of gas I can to see if I can get better gas mileage from a different brand...(of course 92 or 93 octane) Post my results in a month or so....

Heres mine
Well my I30 has about a 120 pounds more wait then the max.
Before I installed a SC I got about 23 MPG on average,I drive mostly back roads and cruise around 40-50 MPH. I would usually fill up at about 350+ Miles and I still had a few extra gallons to boot.
After my SC install,
Last week{first Super Charged week} I got about 15 MPG.
This week{week 2} I got about 18 MPG.
As you can see I have been a little heavy on the gas with my new SC,but it will pass, I think? Muhahaha!
BTW our gas tank is not 15 gallons, rather it is 18.5 Gallons.
I have noticed if you floor it a lot you end up paying a bit more at the pump.{Nah duh}

I just drove to Florida and back last week in my max (5-speed) and got AMAZING gas mileage, my average speed on my Garmin GPS was 76mph (stops calculated in)...I'd say I had the cruise set around 80 the entire trip and I got an average of 27 mpg....that crazy for 80mph. I got 440 miles out of one tank. Before my y-pipe and Intake, I was lucky to get 25 mpg on the highway at 70mph. These mods have DRAMITICALLY inproved my HIGHWAY gas mileage. It's pretty amazing.
-Brian
PS - 240 miles on one tank...man you guys are killing me...and I thought I drove with a heavy foot!

Dang.. I've been getting only about 18 mpg with mixed driving... I'm contemplating getting new O2 sensors to get my mileage back up. I occassionally have a slight backfire when I shift when the engine is cold... overly rich mixture?

I also have 98SE... Hey remember there are alot of things that can affect your milage. When I have my rims on (18" 27lbs each) it looks like it takes off about 50 miles per tank. Also when your oil gets old your milage will suffer too. Otherwise I usually get at least 350 miles a tank on 93 octane. Fuel filter maybe? I just had mine changed after 50k miles and car seems to get better milage. Anything less than 300 I think is kind of bad for Maxima of this model. Bad tire tread or alignment also can burn more gas.

now you guys are all lucky...
I have been getting about 12 mpg mixed highway/city driving for months! Tune up done and O2 sensor replaced.. still blows ***... I usually fill up every 3 days and never reach 200 miles a tank..

SE-Limited 5 speed gets 30 miles to the gallon. I have never heard of anyone else getting that kinda mileage but I guess it will vary from car to car. With the 18.5 gal tank I can go a long way on the highway. How much do you think the usual mods will increase my mileage if any? Thanks.

I usually get 17-19 mpg, both city and highway driving. I floor it once in a while or go over 90mph on a highway, so this definitely takes more gas. I dunno if different gas brands will improve your mpg, I doubt it... although I'm not sure, since I haven't tried anything except Mobil.

I once got 32mpg on the highway.
It was a 500 mile trip and I was on cruise at 74mph the whole way. but I was driving alone and I didnt have any luggage. If you're carrying even one passenger, you're not gonna get that kind of mileage. Once I carried 5 people and 4 bags of 50lb rice. that was very crazy. I think I got like 20mpg that time.
But in the city, anywhere from 16-20mpg is normal, so dont worry.
Dont even try to get above 20 in the city. It is impossible. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE, SO DONT EVEN TRY IT.

When i go on the highway, i usually take the parkway and do an average of 90, i go over 100 every now and then. I'm assuming that this is bad for the gas milage, but when i'm not on the highway, I drive very nicely, rarly go over 30 in city. Never really drive hard, usually shift between 2 and 3 rpm's. And mostly ride in 3rd gear for city.

The DOE-EPA fuel economy numbers numbers are not advertising puffery. They are realistic and achievable. My Maxima routinely gets better mileage than the window-sticker numbers.
Make careful measurements over a long period such as 1,000 miles. Avoid gasohol; pure gasoline delivers better mileage. If your car falls far short of 21/28 it may have a repairable defect. Excessive fuel consumption can be a symptom of a mechanical problem just as much as difficult starting, rough idle, black exhaust smoke, etc. Go to your dealer and politely request that they check your engine and perform any necessary repairs as a warranty item, at no cost to you.

Why is it impossible to get above 20 mpg in the city? My 95 GXE is nowhere near new and I do it regularly. Granted, about 50% of my city driving is done at night (after 10pm) but the drive home from work is rather packed. I have a pretty short drive to work (<10 miles one way) with lots of stop lights and signs. Twice a day, 5 days a week, then driving around on weekends running errands, paying bills, visiting family/friends etc. I fill the car up maybe once every two weeks - depending on amount of weekend driving. Always averages in the 21-22mpg range.
Took a couple trips to Memphis and back last year and got 30.

Re: DOE-EPA numbers are achievable
i used miles per tank because i just wanted to get a rough idea. I agree that useig mpg is more appropriate. but i am only comparing the same car, same size tank and same model. mpg number that other driver calculated are also just estimated. u don't know how much gas in u tank to begin with or left in the tank. u just go by the gas pump how much u put in. That's why is stated between 220-240miles.
anyway, i am sure there is nothing wrong with my car. i been always getting btw 220-240 since day one. i bought the car brand new. the only time i able to get 300mile was taking a trip to atlantic city (all highway). from the responds, i can see some other people are also getting less than 250miles. thank you for the respond.
another question i have is that does the jwt intake improve the gas mileage?

Around 400 highway.
96SE 81K auto
I drive a lot from Los Angeles to Sunnyvale. Around 350 miles each way.
I always make it on one tank. I go about 60 mph for first 60 miles, and 75-85 the rest of the way some through mountains (on the I-5).
When I get to L.A. I still have some gas to drive around town. So I would say about 400 miles or more.

i have a 99se 5-spd and i do about 95 miles/day, 65% of it on the highways. i have seen mileage as high as 29mpg and as low as 24.5mpg. i think the large difference between the high and low values are probably related to the driving style and possibly the brand of fuel that you put in your car. i know if i leave late from home, and get stuck in rush hour, i'm going to be getting bad gas mileage.
