Looking for Deep Powerful Sound: The Cheaper The Better...

I have a 95 SE with 122k Miles. Everything is stock, except for stereo and some cosmetic mods. I want a deep rich and oh so powerful exaust sound. I don't want a farting riced out civic, but something that will put a scare on some people. Now I know to get the real SC sound, I need a SC, but what can I do to make my baby sound like an F-16. I don't mean the loudest thing in the world, but simply nice and deep.

The factors I need to consider include emisson passing, legal issues, and $$money$$. The less I spend the better. I am not looking to gain any performace becuase I am more than satisfied with my stock 190HP.

Would it be an exaust, or an intake. eBay is an option. ALL feedback will be APPRECIATED.

Thanks

exhaust will give you nice growl under 3,000rpm, intake will take over above 3,000rpm.

for intake, any aftermarket replacement cone filter will give you a satisfy result. perferably K&N filter.

for exhaust, you won't pick up out too much horses from catback or just a muffler. but if you just want some sound, replacing the muffler will be enough. the only nice and deep non-ricy muffler i can think of is greddy SP/evo muffler, and powertech 3" dual tip muffler.

i recommend greddy SP catback system. but that's expensive.

i say go with an intake....cheap & it has a nice growl....
pick up a K & N cone and just an adapter (the little bracket) or you can get a midpipe with it too...
I only have a K & N with an adapter & it sounds real deep between 2800K - 3800K rpm. . . above that it's still loud but not as deep...
the whole thing cost me like $45

Maxedoutofcash, where you get that K&N setup from? Does it give any HP gain? or just noise?

Jetblack...
...If you get a y-pipe, anything on the exhaust is a little deeper. It has a nice growl to it, even with stock muffler. Plus, depending on your setup, it can add 15-20 hp. That is not too bad of a bonus for killing two birds with one stone. You can pick up a Stainless Steel one from www.budgetexhaust.com for like $180, and you can put it on yourself in like half an hour. It is easy.

If I were you, I would look at some of the magnaflow mufflers. They are pretty cheap and they usually have just one tip....which I would highly recommend, since I have a dual tip one and it was a pain to cut the hole larger in the bumper to make it look right.....I have a friend that has a cheap magnaflow with a 4" tip on his WRX(4cyl) and it sounds really deep and good. I can't imagine how mean it would sound on there with a y-piped maxima.

brudaddy, i got it from frankencar at a meet but I took it without a midpipe...just the cone with an adapter....
it's hard to say if i have any HP gain because i don't have a dyno & even if there is a 1-2 HP gain, i don't feel it...it's real hard to feel any gains from an intake...
my newly installed y-pipe on the other hand is a different story...

you could just hack your airbox. i cut off part of the lower section of mine, enough to let the air filter sit in there without taping it. and i took it for a drive afterwards, and the car scared me with the growl. when i was racing this guy in a infiniti j30, he left his window down, and after i beat him (of course) he told me the car sounded like a race car. That might extreme, but its nice. I've also got my exhaust straight piped after the cat, no resonator, back to a magnaflow muffler with 2.5 inch tip. no rice at all

What's up buddy? I see how it is you're too good to talk to your boy anymore .
Tell me more about the Y. How do you like the sound and was there noticable pwr gain? Describe the sound for us, you know wrroom or wrrrroooommm or just prrrrrrrrr lol
I was about to finalize my forced air intake and move on to installing the Y, but I got some dude coming over to look at buying the car on thursday, so I have to wait, damnit! But if the price is right..... everything is for sale.

Sorry for going off subject. Yeah, e-bay or homemade intake and Y-pipe/muffler (magnaflow if you ask me).

Yes you can, but you probably won't find an adapter. You can look for it on e-bay (tough to find at times) or just make one.

Pointers on that?
I guess what I am wanting is just like you are saying, I think. I want the K&N Cone filter, but not a true CAI. I still want the power in the lower end of the powerband. Should I just get a drop in filter from K&N and hack airbox, or go for a cone?

i was going to get the OBX Type H catback, but i decided to have a nice quiet ride...until i hit higher RPM's and let my short ram (equipped w/frankencar midpipe and k&n filter) scream past the civics.

But that catback has proven to be nice. Use this site to learn more.

OK, here is how I made my adapter:
Go to Lowe's plumbing section, find a heavy duty pvc 3" outside diameter and about 2" long pipe with a base. Sorry, but I don't know the correct name for the part, I just looked around till I found something I could work with. It was for about $3. Take it home, put it up against the MAF pipe, and draw the outline on the back of the base. Get out the good old jig saw (or different tool) and cut out around it. Now you have yourself a custom made MAF adapter that will fit on your 3" cone.
I took some pictures of the process and will post soon.
Good luck

The biggest gain in sound for an intake is getting rid of the midpipe and replacing it with a straight pipe or something like an Injen. Im running a midpipe/filter and its WAY louder than just running a filter.

I made mine for around 40 bucks...

do you think its possible that you could record a sound clip? I'm thinking of hacking the airbox but I want something not too loud low down, but say above 4k it'd be a nice sound. High pitched or low and throaty?

and do you feel a slightly better throttle respnse if anything?

Speaking of which...Im almost at 100K ...about 60miles away....

Oh and i used Aluminum exhust piping versus PVC. But, i will run PVC during the summer because i feel the metal piping will heat up too much versus the PVC.

i dunno how i would record a sound clip. it growls up to 2500 with the exhaust, then after that, it growls even louder because of the hacked box. it doesnt sound ricey at all. low and throaty, definately not high pitched

cool, low and throaty sounds good to me. does it actually help with the cars breathing or is it just a nice sound?

im not sure whether or not it helps with letting more air into the car. with the exhaust and the hacked air box, i improved my g tech 1/4 times from 15.7 to 15.50 and my 0-60 from 7.24 to 7.07. but thats gtech, i guess different conditions would make it faster. but i consistently ran 15.5's and 7.1's or so after that

My point IS -- miles has absolutely nothing to do with how it will sound.

u said "for cheap" so i've gotta say to get a test pipe, everyone says its bad and has no hp gain but it DOES make the exhaust sound deeper then stock.

and CIAs are awesome

If you want cheap...buy a 40 dollar muffler from ebay and have your local muffler shop do a custom catback. Shouldnt cost more than 150.

I just got my car back from the shop because I had backed into a curb and smashed my sp, so we used most of the SP piping and rebuilt a 7 inch section to connect a world sport muffler to it. Sounds really nice with a warpspeed y-pipe.
