**Insurance question IMPORTANT**

We got a letter from our insurance company asking if my car has "A cut-off device for ignition, starter, or fuel" and we are not sure if it does? I need to know if i do because i think it lowers insurance. Please respond if you know, thanks

Its a separate kill switch that they're talking about. Its an anti-theft device. Our insurance company up here gives discounts on insurers that have this device installed from approved dealers.

Also, no, it does not come standard on our cars (4th Gens) nor is it an option.

Well most modern cars feature a fuel cut off device in the event you are hit. What this does is cut the fuel pump's electrical supply. If you are in a serious crash, the key will still be in the "on" position, therefore the fuel pump will still be working. If one of the lines are broken, the fuel pump will pump gas all over the place as long as the key in still in the "on" position.
There is an inertia switch usually in the trunk that will cut off the fuel flow if the switch senses a sudden loss of motion. ie.. crash.

If you had a '99 then I would say yes...due to the chip technology in the key. (VRIS? correct me please)

If I use my key that was copied from the original (no chip) then the car will only start and stay on for a couple of seconds but then die.

I was under the impression that when the stock alarm goes off, the car cuts off the starter so that it can't be hot-wired? The steering wheel also locks up and can't be moved to the key is inserted in the ignition.

starting in '99, Maxima keys have chips in them that have to match up with the chip in the car...otherwise you ain't goin' nowhere; plus that's why they cost so much to replace/copy...they have to be coded.

i am in the auto insurance industry, your car has a starter kill, u should probably have a passive alarm.... also the alarm discount only comes off the comprehensive on your insurance, it doesnt come off the whole premium......
