Air Bag Light on Solid, NOT Flashing

I've got a 1998 model with the optional side-impact bags. The Air Bag light in the instrument cluster is on solid, not flashing. My mechanic, not a Nissan shop, tried scanning for codes but claimed he couldn't get it to go into Diagnotic mode. He called a friend at a Nissan dealer who said it sounded like the main control module had gone bad. It doesn't look like the bags deployed from what I can tell. Anybody got any ideas?

The same thing happened to my 98, everything looked fine but when I took it to Nissan they said the passenger side sensor was broken...I got slapped with a bill for about $300+...it sucks but better to have it working.

Thanks for the reply. That's actually encouraging because I heard it could be the main control module, many more $$$s!. It also actually may be that my side impact sensor is bad or missing because the dude I bought the car from said he repaired the pasenger door, which had a dent. Was your's in the door?
