tune-up question - spark plugs

Hi guys/gals,
I just got a 99 maxima and decided to do a tune-up on it. These are the things i have changed on it:
-motor oil and filter
-transmission oil and filter
-fuel filter, air filter
-spark-plugs.

Do I need to set the timing in any way? after i change the spark plugs. Also do i have to worry about the gap on the plugs, they looked approximately equal to the old ones.
the car has 79K miles.
i havn't bought a repair manual yet, i'm looking for one, any suggestions?
Also, one more thing happened- the infamous 'service engine soon' light came on 2 days later, can it be related to me changing the plugs, i don't know the code yet. i'll update you guys when i find out.
Is there a recommended mileage when i need to change the timing-belt?

thanks in advance.
-zee

I remember reading in the faqs that we have a dual stage timing chain which is mean to last the life of the engine, so we dont have to worry about changing out timing belt.

for the Spark plugs, it depends on what kind of spark plugs you have, if there the platinum spark plugs then you dont need to set the gap on it, but I belive the copper ones need to be set, I believe you need to get a special little tool to set the gap ( been told it like a dollar or two) and it will set the gap, you just need to find out thenumerical value for the gap ( think it may be in the manual or service manual, someone help me if I'm wrong).

pull the codes for you engine check light, if you didnt change your sparks yet, and you see the engine check light then maybe get the car check out, I say that out of experince, lucky you, you got an check light, I bought my max, the clutch was about to die, same with my CV joints, speedometer barely worked, Knock sensor malfunction, but I made the dealership fix it all for free.

Pull the codes: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=104931

The gap for the plugs should be .044"

Change your PCV valve and clean your throttle body http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=254238

ONLY use NGK's for the Maxima.
