Let say that I wanted to change my gauge cluster. I have a GXE and I want to put in the SE gauge cluster.

How would I get the milage to read correctly?

Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking... and don't worry, this isn't a roundabout question about how to roll back the odometer.

I'm just thinking that if/when I get tired of my indiglos, I still want real white-face gauges - and I could get one off a wreck Max or something.

what year is your max? do you have digital odometer or analog? i have a 99 GXE w/ digital and i swapped gauge clusters with a 98 SE w/ digital. i think nissan dealers can program the mileage for you for a fee. if you don't want to do that, then you can open up the cluster and actually take out the whole speedometer assembly including the odometer and swap it to the SE gauge cluster. in addition to the two screws holding the gauge face, there are 4 screws on the back holding the actual guage board in. then there's a data cable at the top of the board that you unplug(i think that's the cable used by nissan to reprogram the odometer). and then you can just swap the gauge assemblies.

I have a 95 so it's an analog.

How much would it be for the dealer to program? (An arm and a leg probably, right?)
