Clockspring for 1996 GLE (Airbag, Cruise Control)

Hello Everyone,

Is it really hard and expensive to find and replace clockspring for 1996
Maxima GLE? I was told that it is about $500CAD for the part only and it
cannot be after market one, only original.

My car was diagnosed having faulty clockspring, as a consequence the Airbags and Cruise Control are not working...

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Vladimir.

My mom's Caravan had a bad clockspring and it was about $400(US) to fix. I would say a new one is better, but don't see why a used one couldn't be installed. Ask around to see if a used one is ok.

You definately have a bad clock-spring but its not hard to replace at all! in fact I recently just did it on my car. You should be able to use a used one, but people have told me its not possible, but the unit is directly behind the steering wheel. go to a junk yard and see if you can get one off a car in there...should work fine! BUT you have to get one that is 95/96 specific as the 97-99s are different

I would like to thank everyone who replied. In general, I've got two opinions: "I've never heard of 'the clockspring' failing on a nissan" and "You definately have a bad clock-spring". Unfortunately, I can't fix it by myself and I have to rely on opinion of a man referred to me. I'm trying to verify his estimation about the cause and cost.

I'm going to look for the clock-spring. If something interesting comes out from the repair I'll post my message here.

Thanks again guys. I really appreciate your response.
