New prospect

OK guys, we may have a replacement for the old Max.
99 GLE black on black (leather), bose, fogs, 104K. Haven't seen it yet, but the discription by an authorized dealer (not some bullsh!t used car salesman) after a 100 point inspection, tells me it is in very good shape.
I am picking it up tomorrow for $........................No, although we (dealer and I) set a price over the phone and they tagged the car SOLD, I am going to tell you when I get back tomorrow, how much I forked out and what condition it is.
Meanwhile, as tremendous source of info I consider the org to be, please give me you $ amounts of how much you would pay for it and we will see who was closest. I will give you a hint: I feel like I got a pretty good deal

Turn and walk away.
Don't get a GLE, not matter what shape it is in.
Get something with a 5spd...you can put leather in it if necessary.
Kind of high mileage for that year. I thought I had high miles with 90k on my 99, but that is a lot higher.

What's wrong with a GLE. It has everything but the SE springs and white guages. He said it even has fogs. It might not have a spoiler though, so what a spoiler and springs, which he may want to replace anyway since it's over 100K.. But it should have everything else. It's even the coveted "black on black leather".

I don't care what color it is, it is not a 5spd!
You missed my point, techie, in saying why not to get a GLE. Yeah, they are fine max's, but they are all autos. You are right, who cares about the white face gagues, and the springs, but the 5spd, should be a must.

i'd stay away. High Mileage and it might have been driven hard by some kid. Foglights are Aftermarket mod to GLE's, if i remember correctly. They aren't available stock. Be careful with this one. I prefer to get a car that's purely stock. That's just me tho

Actually, you can get fogs stock on a GLE.
However, I know you cannot get a 5spd stock on one.

128k on my 99 GLE. not a single engine or tranny problem yet. brakes and suspension have been the biggest concern. got some new tires 2 years ago. one time the air bag light was flashing, but that got fixed. and the cd player went dead from being played for almost all those 128k miles. everything's fine on it now though. *crosses fingers*

Exactly, it seems every "tranny problem" or "tranny needs to be rebuilt" post on here seems to be related to 5-speeds. Unless someone really wants stick for "fun" or is SERIOUSLY concerned about weight in the car for when they go to the track and is an Excellent (or plans to be) 5-speed driver an auto is not a bad way to go. For 5-speed enthusiasts, that's the only way to go. For everyone else it should be what you feel you need or like personally. I'll admit I think a stick is fun to drive sometimes, I've owned them in the past. Since I'm not going to the track, I won't need it. As much as it can be fun sometimes, it becomes a pain most of the time driving in traffic a lot.

Maciek, don't turn it down just because it's not a 5-speed if you don't NEED a 5-speed.

Everyone needs a 5spd in a Maxima.
You say that you have owned 5spd's before, but prolly not max's. Right? I have had other 5spd's too, but the max is by far the best with the 5spd that I have had. I mean, if you want it to be just a grocery getter, get the auto. If you want it to be a sports sedan, get the manual.

Oh, and I use my max every day for a daily driver. I love it! I would not have it any other way than to have that kind of power with a manual in traffic. It is great, and until you have one, you will be missing out!

You seem pretty enthusiastic about 5-speeds there, brudaddy. Call me lazy, but I prefer being able to just turn on the car and go. No need to shift every few rpm's.

Uh....ok...manual's are faster. Not like I was arguing that. I really don't see how the maxima is considered a "fast" car anyway. We only have 190 hp. There are soooo many faster cars than us.

brudady everybody has a preference. i have 99 se with all the GLE options (including heated front seats, TCS BOSE) and 73K on the clock (i put 13K in one year, i loved to drive it so much)

i.e. i personally think red maximas look FUGLY yet i don't tell people to stay away from them.

my auto is in good condition and i'm adding a tranny cooler to it as well to lengthen its life and for the vbmod in the future. you try driving a stick in nyc on BQE in traffic. besides i gotta have at least one hand free when i'm with my girlfriend in the car, besides if he wanted a 5speed i'm sure he'd be looking for one. and if his auto tranny ever dies he can get a 5speed swap if he really wants to.

i'd say 7.5K-8K is a good price for that maxima. (black usually costs a bit more)

Exactly.............The thing is there are a big range of people on this forum and what they are looking for. Appearance/ammenities vs. performance. The trouble is you get someone asking a question without explaining what they're looking for in the first place. You then, of course, get everyone giving advice from their point of view.

Actually, he sounded pretty sure of what he was getting, all he was asking was for everyone to guess what he paid for it.

Brudaddy, I just don't follow the "if it's not a 5-speed it's not a sports car" thing. I'm glad you like your 5-speed and I'm content with my auto. No I don't just consider this a grocery getter, but I don't go to the track and I don't need to prove myself to some teenager that pulls up next to me in their modded car. I'm 33, married with children. We can just classify me as more of a "hobbiest". I appreciate what the car has for what it's worth. It's also nice to be able to improve on some of those things and make them even better.

OK guys I think it is time to let you all know if the prospect became a reality.

A little Jeopardy music please....

I bought it today for an even $6K. Here is everything about it:
- 104K
- 1 adult owner since new
- GLE
- Black exterior
- Black leather with wood trim (super hot by the way!)
- Bose + 6cd changer in trunk
- moonroof
- fogs
- heated seats
- temperature control with outside temperature gauge
- ABS

outside has a few blemishes (both bumpers, small door ding, one fog light cracked and a ding on a fender)
Inside is a whole different story. This thing looks brand new! without a single blemish anywhere inside. Driver seat doesn't even have pronounced creases from sitting in it. And by the way all of you that don't have it and wonder is black on black all that? Yes it is and a lot more! My previous one was tan leather interior (I thought it looked good), it is nothing compared to the b-o-b.

Bruce, I kind of wanted a 5spd after selling my previous GLE, but because of the amount of driving that I do (about 40K per year) and often spending full days in the car, I am quite fine with the auto.

Regarding the price, I believe I have done quite good on my two maximas:
I bought the 1st one 98 GLE (without heated seats, cd changer, fogs and spoiler) with 114K miles for $6400. Drove it for a year and put 30K miles on it and sold it for $6700.
Two weeks later (today) I bought this 1 year/40K miles younger one for $700 less than that and fully loaded (only lacking a spoiler).
I feel pretty good about those transactions.
P.S. Pics will follow very soon.

Hey bud, yeah I think I am gonna put it on...sorry.
I would have let you know earlier, but It was a tossup between this max and an Acura TL. 100K miles is not that bad, I am gonna keep it for 1 maybe 2 years, so I think it is worth it. Hope you understand.

thanks viper.
I know if I put it up in the local auto-rv, I'd sell it for $8K, no problem.
