yeah, you don't have to take the rotor off. Just align the wheel where there is a hole in the heat shield behind it. That way, the lug stud will pop right out of that indention. Once you get it where it needs to be, go put the tranny in gear so that the wheels won't turn. That way, you are not having a murdurous time trying to get the lug stud back in there.
I would go ahead and put the wheel back on there just to give you a spacer to pull the lug stud back on. You will have to take the wheel back off to make sure that the stud is in there all the way, but this is the best way. Then, if it is in there all the way, you are good to go and you can put everything back together and roll.
Do you need parts, or have you already purchaced them?

I did it last weekend. I didn't want to use the wheel as a spacer, in case I damaged it. I bought 1/2" nuts from homedepot (buy hard ones), and used a lug nut that I had from advance auto parts. Unlike the ones that came with my car this one was see through - which is good, because you'll need either a see-through one or a hell of a lot of washers.
I had my wheel off. It was in gear, but the damn thing still turned. The height of the car was such, however, that I could put a hammer perpendicular to the floor between the floor and another bolt (which way the wheel didn't turn). You'll need a breaker bar to really torque that bastard on.
Also, I'd recommend possibly greasing the lug, and the stud, and the hole, AND taking your time. You don't want it to get so hot that you cause damage to the stud (I caused a little on mine from going too quickly and not greasing).
Basically though it's easy. Hammer the buggar out and put a new one in

how are you going ot damage your wheel? I mean, all you are doing is screwing the lug onto the lug stud against the rotor like you do when you change a tire or something. That is the same thing here, and you are not going to hurt your wheel.
