Yeah im pretty sure you can. The only difference is the driverside drive axel. I heard of a kid even putting in a 5th gen six speed.

The non-locking tranny off a 2000-2001 is almost identical to the 4th gens. You DO NOT need a driver's side axle (unless you get the VLSD AE 2001 tranny). What you do need is a vehicle speed sensor--there is one on my 1995 but was not on the 2001 tranny I got; it has the port for it but it is capped. You just have to remove the cap and install the sensor from a 4th gen.

BTW, if you are doing a conversion, don't you need both driver's and passenger side axles (for manual tranny) anyways?

I thought i needed to have drive axel for manual transmission. driver axel for automatics fit as well?

My bad. Was speaking in terms of a tranny swap (which I am doing) not conversion. The drivers side axle is the same for non-locking manual trannies from 1995-2001. Since you are doing a conversion, you will need a driver's side axle from a manual. Sorry for the confusion.
