If you actually let the fuel level get so low that the
"hey idiot" light comes on, you deserve to be stranded on the side of the road.

Your welcome ****er. If you want all the dirt or whatever on the bottom of your tank to be sucked into the engine then go ahead. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Mine turns on when I have about 1.5-2 gallons left in the tank. I usually fillup when the tank gets near/under the 1/4 mark (usually when I have 4-5 gallons left in the tank)

im wondering if thats true, i figure everytime you fill your tank the dirt is uniformly distributed throughout the tank because of all the accelerating and decelerating we do on the road, not to mention all the bumps and what not, ive opened up a ford econoline 1990 E250 van with a quarter tank of gas, in the 5 gallon containers i filled, i dindt see any residue, it doesnt make sense to me, stating that there would be alot of dirt on the bottom of the tank would suggest that your fuel doesnt mix when your car is jumping around on the road

my light doenst go on, i found that out on the way to a gas station at 3 am after an allnighter for a final this winter, so i pretty much cant rely on the 'idiot' light

yea it should have a light maybe a burn out one. open up your cluster to find out. check the faq on how to install gauges and you'll have definite solution to replace your burnt out light. 1996 Uses Bulb #194. BTW I dont Run On Gas Below The Quarter Take Line. Makes Your Fuel Pump Send Bad Stuff To Your Engine. (Dirt Etc.)

You stupid ****. So what if we have fuel filters? Every car does *********. Sooner or later filters get clogged. During the 15k-30k miles the filter is on don't you think that all that crap will get stuck in there sooner or later? Ask any of the older and respected members(none in this thread yet), hell ask anyone that knowas anything about cars and they'll tell you what I said.

haha, well im glad you have a fuel filter too. I was under the impression that the tank is aggetatied so that any debris will be proportionally mixed with the gas. If not then I am the Tard, but if not.......

correct me if im wrong cause i dont know much in this area but wouldnt the engine suck gas from the bottom of the tank anyways? i mean how else will the engine get to the gas at the bottom. so even if you are full, the engine would get the gas at the bottom of the tank, which according to Big D, is where all the dirt or whatever is.

Ok im reply to big d's post about fuel filter getting clogged after 15-30k, well.. duh.. i would hope you replace your fuel filter when its maintanance is due.. So, I dont see the problem with on with the hey idiot light for a while as long as you put gas before you get stranded...

I know on FORD SHO's you cant run on the idiot light because the fuel pump overheats and gets messed up, but then again.. its a ford.

The Maxima low fuel idiot light is just thatesigned by an idiot. It is way too small and dim, and does not have a chime attached. Yet the high-beam and cruise control indicator lights blind you at night. WTF?? Hope Nissan fired that engineer.

BTW:I took apart my cruise control switch (carefully) and put some green paint on the bulb. Now it doesn't bug me at night, and I can still see that it is on during the day. Ihave not gotten around to dimming the high beam indicator yet.

I run my 95 to the gas light every tank, since it has 220K miles that means i've filled it up about 550 times. My fuel filter had never been changed until a couple months ago (about 1K miles). What a waste of time and money. I would have never replaced it if i could go back in time. In fact the 5th gen's fuel filter is in the tank with the pump and not designed to be replaced.

It's silly and ignorant to claim that driving the tank low is bad for the car.
