STS blew my trannY!!!!! HELP!!!!!

i was driving on the 91 today. in 5th going 80... downshifted to 4th to try to pass a car to change lanes and my tranny blew. the long bar that is under the car that connects to tranny to the shift **** seems to have popped loose.. there is a fluid leak where the tranny connects to the shifting rod under the car. the boot there is not torn so it didnt dislodge all the way..but enough to where the gears arnt moving into place..

my dad says mayb the clutch jsut blew.. but clutches blow gradually.. and i dont think he tranny would leak. he says the pacesetter sts put extra pressure on where the shifter rod connects to tranny?.

anyone know whats wrong exactly?. how to fix and approx cost?.. shuld i get a tranny rebuild or a used tranny installed?

Sounds like one of your CV Axels broke and poped off! if that the case, thats no biggy, just get the axel(s) replaced.

Ok...that long bar I assume is the drive axle, right? It goes from the transmission to the wheel? It's the one that has an bracket that bolts to the block?

That's very bizarre that it 'popped out'. I don't think I've ever heard of that happening.

Anyhow, your fluid is probably leaking from the gaping hole in your differential left by your axle deciding it wanted to be free. Fix your axle, clean it all off and see if it leaks from the shift linkage.

Is the axle broken at all?

I doubt this has anything to do with your clutch.

that boot you see is just a dust cover, it doesnt hold fluid, the seal under the rubber boot does hold fluid. I forgot the name of the seal but just tell your mechanic its the seal thats around the striking rod.

its not the drive axel..its the main shifter rod that connects to the shifter in your car and the tranny where is helps moves the gears..

i took the cat off.. and looked at the shifter assembly.. that is all perfect.. when i move the shifter in the car.. the lever moves, and the rod that the lever connects to moves what whole asembly is good up until the point where it connects to the tranny..

i dont know how a tanny works very well..where does the shifter rod go when its inside the tranny.. does it move the gears directly..or does it act as a lever for somethign else to move the gears?..

the seal is not what im concerned about.. car wont go into any gear.. it feels like it goes into gear.. but the max wont go anywhere..

The long rod outside the tranny connects to a little rod inside the tranny (about 6 inches long) that shifts a lever that pops things into gear. Sounds like your tranny went, but I doubt I would blame the STS on that.....

Ok, ignore what everyone has said except for i30mike and to an extent nismo.

What has probably happened is that your shift rod and striking rod have dislodged themselves from the transmission. The shift rod connects to the striking rod via a bushing just aft of the transmission. The striking rod can be pulled back too far and be dislodged enough to keep the transmission from getting into gear. You should be able to disconnect the shift rod and push the striking rod back into place and hook everything back up again. That seal may need to be replaced however as it may have torn when coming loose or may tear when being pushed back into place. If you are not familiar with how this works, or are not great with tools, you would be better off to take it to a local transmission shop and have them take care of it for you.

Hope this helps!
