better launch in a 4th gen auto
better launch in a 4th gen auto
whats the best way to get a good launch in a automatic 99 maxima? i feel lately its been crappy..and my 0-60 has been with a watch or seconds on the radio and yeah thats kinda lame but thats all i got...and a friend was telling me that what would help me with my car is a "stall converter" something about beening able to rev high rpms before you launch..but i dont know if that is safe or not.
Go to the track and see how good of a 60' you can pull. Your method of timing your 0-60 is in no way accurate, I can't even begin to express how useless it is. As far as technique to let a good launch, go check out the 1/4 forum and read old posts.

If you really want to know how to launch your car forget about posting threads, forget about asking for advice, get rid of your stop watch method, don't concern yourself with 0-60 times. Go to a local track and makes some runs. Only then will you know what launch techniques are working for you.The track is the only place to really find out if what your doing is right or wrong. You need acturate, electronically timed devices to really know.
Some people with auto's brake torque and some don't. Some guys with 5spd's launch at 3K, some at 2K, some at idle. Everybody gets different results. When I first started going to the track I would think I got out of the hole pretty good......then I would see my 2.39 60'. So "thinking" you know how to launch means nothing.
Go spend an afternoon having fun at the track. Try different things so see what gives the best results. You are going to want to be in the 2.15-2.25 60' range to consider the method your using to be working.

Honestly, launching at 2000 or 2200 is plenty on the auto. I find it nice when i launch at 1800, not too much spin and hook up right away. Really gotta experiment, different tires require a different launch, plus if you are not n/a, that makes a difference.
So how does the Auto compare to the 5sp in terms of overall driveability and dependability? Pros, Cons?
I've test-driven a '95 SE w/ 5 sp manual but never an Auto. Honestly, after driving various BMW's (M3) and VW's, I'm not too fond of the feel of the manual on a 4th Gen. maxima. It just didn't feel natural, but maybe it's all in my head. So how do all you guys with Autos like it??
I would do a forum search on this topic, but it says I am not allowed to search.

What you wanna do to produce a decent launch is hold your brake pedel down "It doesn't have to be mashed to the floor" just enough to keep you car from rolling forward. What your trying to accomplish is to "FLASH" the torque convertor. Then what you do is floor the gas pedel & at the same time your right foot hit's the gas pedel you let off the brake pedel. You have just learned how to properly flash a torque convertor...
You don't want to rev it while holding the brake pedal down you just want some slight brake pressure for a split second to allow the stall to come up mashing the gas to the floor & letting off the brake pedal happens almost at the same time. I have a big block convertable in the garage that I built when I was 16 & I put a 3000 stall converter in it. It's alittle different with that high of a stall because you can hold the brake down & hold your rpm's at like 2800 & the car won't move. The trick with lower stalls like stock converters (1200 - 1700) is to get a decent slip before it grip's. So that's why you want to "FLASH" the converter. It's not the same holding the brake down & reving the engine. It needs to happen quickly to get the best result's. When I do it in my auto I get about 1/4 second worth of wheel spin then it hooks up... Just make sure when you practice it that you put the gas pedel to the wood quickly. kinda like squishing a bug "BAmmm" you know?

Bye the way, mine looks like the white one in your picture ecept for the black wheels & the white door pilar's. I never could understand why someone would want that to stick out? I always thought it looks better black with black tinted windows? Just my opinion!!!

sweet...so let me get this straight...have your foot on the brake just enough for the car not to roll..then mash the gas..keep it on the gas..then pop the brake..like you do all this at the same time? i need launching in an auto for dummies...
