how do you get those scratches out?

posting this here because its a little more technical then the detailing forum. Is there any way to get scratches out without having to repaint (obviously buffing will sorta do it)

If the scratch doe's exceed the clear coat you can wet sand the area with 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper to remove light scratches. You will then need to buff the paint to get the shine back. Remember when you wet sand with finer grit sandpapers it makes the top coat alot smoother allowing minor sufface scratches to polish out. Just make sure not to sand to hard & burn threw the clear coat. If the scratch is deeper then the clear coat & go's intot he base (color) or primer your basically screwed. Just touch it up the best you can!!! I hope that will help you?

My friend got his Jeep keyed and he got a Crayon/polish scratch remover kit. Obviously it didn't take the scratch away (it scratched the paint, not just clearcoat), but it hid it pretty well.

Like a small key scratch or a big patch of paint flaked off?

Meguiar's Clear Cut cleaner is a good thing to use.
Get a rotary polisher, and apply and rub into the paint. Then, buff off and the scratched should come out of the surface(clear coat). If they are deeper, you cannot use this to get them out.
It is really good for those fingernail scratched under the door handle and such. That is the kind of thing.

Then, I would follow up with Polish from Meguiar's.
Buff off.

Then, I would use Meguiar's Carnuba Yellow Wax.
And buff it off.
You should be good to go.

Don't use the polish withouth getting a coat of wax on top of it. The polish is what makes it shine, but it does not protect the paint...that is what the wax is for.

my paint is so scratched i bought some touch up paint, and some langka to smooth it out (www.langka.com) which i hope will be able to repair the deepest scratches.

how effective is scratch x? i used it with a random orbit polisher, and it seems to makes the scratch less obvious, but far from smooths it out. i have spiderwebbing and swirl marks like mad, and it didnt help too much. maybe i should use something more abrasive? i need to be able to find it in canada...

I used a tube of Megiuars scratch X and for the most part this stuff really works! however it doesn't cure the "spiderweb" syndrome <arrrgh> .
