***PICS*** What is this sensor for?

I installed my ebay shorty intake the other day, and when I took out the OEM crap, there was a sensor way on the bottom. It was in one of the pipes. I just went on a hunch and decided to install it with the new intake. Here's a pic:

Here's a pic of what the sensor looks like:

I'm assuming it's some type of intake temp sensor. I haven't gotten a CEL or anything, but I have noticed that when the engine is cold and I start it, right away after I crank it the rpms will drop so low it almost stalls out, then it will come back up to normal and run fine.

any ideas????

If I were you then I would make sure that sensor is installed somewhere in the pipe & preferably between the Filter & the MAF. This sensor has alot to do with air/fuel adjustment it needs to be able to take readings from inside the airstream that will eventually get into the engine. Beside's, I'm willing to be it's alot cooler inside the intake tube under acceleration then just dangling there in the warm a$$ engine compartment. This sensor works in conjunction with the TPS, so make sure that you put it back in. It's not just about if you get a CEL or not. it's about air/fuel ratio management.

We should have some clarification here. IIRC, the one you zip-tie anywhere is called the boost sensor, the one in the picture should go in the intake tract somewhere.

My Place Racing CAI had a hole for this one, but my boost sensor is zip-tied to my battery cable.

Can someone refresh my memory?

The sensor looks very different on a 96. It's just a small resistor or FET connected between come plastic arch. If there is a hole for it obviously put it in the hole. If not just tie it to something so it doesn't fly everywhere.

Dude that needs to be in the hole. From your pics it looks like its after the MAF. If air can get in there it wont be measured by the MAF but the o2 sensors will read that you are getting more air and will eventually turn on a CEL

This is the ambiant air temperature sensor. I believe that it is for diagnostic purposes only. The only way to get a CEL is to unplug it. It does not matter where it is in the intake path to work. It can be zip tied up and you will have no drivability issuses. Heck you can unplug it and have no drivablity issues just a CEL. FYI the 95-96 are way different looking, like Big D mentioned, 97-98 are probes like shown and the 99 is a probe too but has a different plug. The boost sensor can be zip tied up too. Either way no worries OneToughMax

If he drove with it unplugged, wouldn't he be getting air through that hole? Dirty air. It's after the filter so there is nothing there to clean it.

well if he doesnt have it in the hole yes it would be bad. I ment if the sensor was unplugged from the harness he wont have a problem.

Well, the hole wasn't there - I drilled a hole for the sensor and put it in there. If I hadn't drilled the whole and ziptied the sensor somewhere then it would be fine. I just figured since the sensor came out of the intake path, I would put it back in

We were doing Massacio's car today and noticed that on the intake plumbing. It looks very different on my 95 but I drilled and installed it on my homemade midpipe.
Note: If you unplug it you won't know how hot your engine bay is.
