Shift Boot replacement

Shift Boot replacement
Hi,
I have a 96 SE with a 5 speed. I was wondering if anybody has had to replace the shift boot around the shifter. Mine is starting to come apart at the very top. I would like to know how hard it is to remove the center console and were I can buy a real leather shift boot to replace the stock one. Thanks for any advise.
PS: Everytime I try to do a search on the forum it tells me I am not allowed. Any suggestions on what I need to do to be able to do a search? Thanks again

Boot: The shift **** unscrews (but that beeatch is TIGHT). The whole surround just unclips (grab the lip just rear of the shifter and pull up. The front edge (either side of the ashtray) is hooked up under the console above it, so you'll have to watch that. Once you get the thing unclipped you'll see how easy it is.
As for the boot, I bought an old black leather trenchcoat from the Salvation Army for $5 and made a new boot with my wife's sewing machine. Took about 30 mins to unpick the seams, cut two new matching panels and sew them together. Now have a factory-looking leather boot.
BTW, my stock boot had leather at the top where is it attached under the ****, but the rest was vynil. The leather is MUCH nicer. In fact now that you mention this I'm gonna replace the brown e-brake boot with a leather one cut from the same $5 leather jacket...
EDIT: Oh, and the thread/the stitching around the shift **** on my '96 was deteriorated to the point that the effort required to unscrew it split the seam. I had to buy new thread and restitch it, but that cost like 99c and took 20mins. The other option would have been to buy a new **** from ebay for $30...

You can try here http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=292436 but I think the group deal might be over. If so ask Danny from that thread or email the folks at Redlinegoods.
