when i noticed that my passenger side cv boot was torn, i didnt replace the axle until about 2000 miles later when it was making really bad noises. **be clear tat i am not telling you to drive on it, im just saying what i did **

You wont have to replace the whole axle unless it clicks and makes bad noises. Crank the wheel all the way locked to one side while moving and if it doesnt make noises you should be ok with just the boot. If the boot has just recently torn, your axle should be fine, and you will only need to replace the boot. I just went through this myself.
