auto tranny problems...no engine braking, hard shifts
I've been having problems with the auto tranny on my 98 se lately. What's strange is I had the same problems on my 87 iroc before, so I noticed it right away.
The way it started on the max is I was just pulling away from a stop sign, normal acceleration, not hard, and the 1-2 shift slammed real hard, like, shook the whole car. Then it would shift to 2-3 really hard and high, and never make it to OD. Also, when I'd try to kick it down to second when cruising in third it would not. The other quirky thing is that while coasting, RPMs would drop to idle, like there was no engine braking whatsoever, even at 60 mph. And when I'd get into the throttle again, it would take time for the engine RPMs to catch up to the car's speed and then begin to make the car accelerate.
Luckily, like my camaro, it's an infrequent thing. On the max, I parked it overnight and it was gone the next day. It seems fine now and hasn't happened in a couple days but I almost feel it's a warning sign to coming problems.
When I talked to a tranny guy about my camaro he said it was a sticky valve body. Could this possibly be the same for the max? The car has 130k on it and the tranny fluid was changed not too long ago. I don't really want to have it rebuilt or anything. Do you think another fluid change or flush would prevent this from happening again? Thanks guys...and I really wish I would have just waited and found a 5-speed. grrrrr

well ist hard to say - its your check engine light on , how about overdrive light flashing at you?
it could be a first symptom of drop resistor going bad or even your line pressure solenoid.
check this thread - i've had very similar problem few weeks ago http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=296692
pm me if you have any q's
Nick.

I have no engine light or any indication of a problem other than the symptoms I mentioned. Could the drop resistor going bad cause the intermittent problems like mine? It still hasn't done it again, only that one time for that one night.
Also, any write up on how to change that resistor or where it is located? I don't have a service manual. Thanks for the help.
