I just bought a 97 SE 5 speed and the shiftknob is too high. Does anyone feel the same way? I just cut the shifter by 1" and replaced the **** with a MOMO air racer. Looks great. Feels great. More comfortable.

I cut it with a Dremel rotary tool. It took about 10 minutes because I didn't want to break the bit. Make sure to cover everything due to metal shavings flying off. The MOMO shiftknob comes with a variety of sleeves that will fit on the shaft of the shifter. It also comes with allen screws to lock down the shiftknob.

Dremel is a good tool

I've had good results cutting all sorts of things with the Dremel rotary grinder using one of their abrasive cut-off wheels.

Most short throw shifters will also fix it. I installed a SMC and the shift **** is [I]quite{/I] a bit lower.

If you want before and after pics let me know.

I cut mine with a hacksaw. I chopped off about 2 and a half inches on mine and it seems just right. The STS is great, but if you want a free mod( and we all do!) choppin the shaft is great.

You can't use the stock **** after you cut it. But it does give you a great reason to buy a Momo

actually

The shift **** is not high at all. It's just the shifter and fulcrum itself. I had a razo shift **** on my 89 Mazda 626 and I replaced it with my 97 Maxima SE shift **** and it actually reduced the overall height. I'm about to order a Pacesetter STS from JC Whitney ($60) to correct the shifter problem.
