MAF relocation info needed

Members,

I'm thinking about making my own CAI, similar to Injen or Place racing. I'm using a custom fabricated specialty HAI that I made right now. However with my dry nitrous system the further I can place the nozzle from the throttle body the cooler the intake charge will be. So my logic is to relocate the MAF further away from the throlle body so I can still keep my nitrous nozzle behind the MAF but further away from the throttle body. My question being do you think it will be safe to extend the factory wiring for the MAF. I want to relocate it about 1 to 1-1/2ft. from the factory location. Second if I do lengthen the wires do you think it will effect the signal to the ECU? And last if I do indeed extend the wires should I use a slightly larger gauge wire to maintain the proper current draw? Thanks guy's any info would be a big help.

No need to extend the wires. what i did with my max was unwrap the wires (remove the loom and black tape) and i was able to keep the rest of my wires in the same location but the connector for my MAF was able to reach the new location when i installed my INJEN CAI. I just then retaped everything.

Thanks for the info, but my intention is to relocate the MAF alot lower then the Injen intake does. I would like to relocate the MAF somewhere under the battery box, kind of where the stock air box resonator used to be. What I'm trying to accomplish is to have about 2ft. of intake piping between the MAF & the thottle body. So knowing this do you think it is safe to extend the wires?

i moved my MAF down infront of the radiator and dont have any problems...no extensions or wire upgrades needed.

If you're confident with your soldering capablities then go ahead. And putting a slightly bigger gauge wire migt help but make sure that the connection are very good. I would also use shrink wrap after soldering the wires.

I've heard that the ideal location of a dry nitrous system nozzle is about 6 inches from the throttle body. Anything further away might allow cooling effect but run into problems of nitrous saturating the intake piping instead of getting into the engine.

I wouldn't move it anywhere around the radiator cause of the header being right there. It will melt or damage something sooner or later. Also don't place your filter there as that spot gets the hottest and has the least cool air getting to it.

The oem harness to the maf is shielded from EM interference. If you make an extension, you should wrap the extension in copper tape that 3M makes for shielding purposes (or maybe you can find some shielded wire).

Or not. I ran a 6' extension when I had my maf in the passenger side fender well for a while. I left it unshielded and didn't notice anything extraordinary. Still, it's good to be protected.
