the Y-pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the Catalytic Converter. One
is a rear sensor, mounted in the exhaust pipe downstream of the Cat. The
"front right" sensor is the one which senses the oxygen concentration in the
exhaust stream emitted from the right bank of cylinders. The right bank is
also called the rear bank or bank 1. It is cylinders 1, 3, and 5.
As you surmised, this part is accessed from below the car.
The Oxygen Sensors are vital components in the electronic engine management
system. Your engine will continue to run with a bad sensor, but it should
be replaced. A bad sensor causes decreased engine power, increased fuel
usage, increased burden on the Catalytic Converter, and may prevent your car
from passing a smog test.
A replacement Oxygen Sensor costs about $100 and takes one hour of labor to
replace. If you like to do your own "wrenching" you can buy the part for
about $75. This sensor is difficult to reach and you may have to buy a
special socket for your ratchet wrench.

For specific information about replacing Oxygen Sensors on your Maxima see
the Chilton manual (page 4-13) or the Haynes manual (page 6-14).
