Hello, I'm new to the Nissan autos so bear with me. I am currently looking at a 1997 Maxima SE auto that has 115,000 miles on it. It was a one owner lease car and is in excellent shape....only issue is the miles.

My question is how dependable are these motors? I want something that will take 100,000 more miles and get me through 4 years of college. I know the car was well taken care of and had the oil changed every 3k miles. Also are there any issues with these cars that I should be concerned with? Tranny? By the way I can pick the car up for $9,000 which I think might be a steal. Any advice and input would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and by the way, the car is loaded with every option except leather.

I bought my 91 SE 5sp with 84k on it, drove it as my daily commuter. I'm in sales and I put alot of miles on a car. I had 145k on it in less than 2yrs. It still ran strong. Still had the original clutch, struts, timing belt, and an untouched engine. I always had synthetic oil in it. All I did was put a couple sets of tires on it, one complete set of brakes all around, and replaced a section of the exhaust, however it still had the original muffler yet! I sold it to a college kid here locally and he still is driving the heck out of it. I feel confident that these maximas are good for 200k+ with the right care. However, I think $9,000 might be a little high. I only paid 10k for my 96 SE 5sp w/71k 6mos ago. The price sounds good but that's alot of miles. I would try to find one with fewer miles and pay another grand or two.

I have over 105K miles >>>>>>>>

on my 95 SE auto and it still drives like it is new. If youhave all the maintence records and are sure the oil has been changed regularly then the engine will last you at least to the 200K miles mark. Mine does not even burn oil and still idles smooth that sometimes my girlfriend thinks the car is not on when she drives it and tries to restart the car again, but then hears the starter grinding and realizes that it is already on !!!! I say go for it, try to offer him $8000 and work your way up, but as always have a mechanic take a look at it, and I mean an independent mechanic not from the dealer or a friend of the person selling it, the money you spend to have a mechanic look at may save you big bucks in the long run !!!!! Good Luck !!!!!!

My car has 120k on it, and it runs great. I traded the other day with my friend who has a 97 with 32k, and he couldn't believe how tight and smooth my car is. Hasn't required any major mechanical work, doesn't burn oil, and there hasn't been any work that I couldn't do myself with hand tools. I'm also a student, and it's been a great car for me. Takes me and 3 friends to Vegas with luggage, tows my dirtbikes, holds almost everything I own, has NEVER let me down, and is a blast to drive. The gas mileage isn't the best, but other than that, I have no complaints.

These engines are very dependable. I have a 1988 Nissan Maxima w/137k on it and still going strong. My mileage is nothing compared to some, some have over 200k and still pull. These engines are very dependable.

I had a 1988 before I bought my 1992 sold that to my sister and now own a 96. The 88 I had 247,320. miles had every mod that I could get my hads on. I traded it in for the 92 the dealer could not believe that the car had so much miles and look so good. The car was in mint cond. I have no dout that if you take care of it it will last a long time. Have picturs, was a real nice car!

I bought my '96 last December with 72k on it. Have over 90k now, and it runs great! I hear that with normal maintenance, the engines will go to 200k no problem.

I've got 2 of these cars

A 95 GXE and a 97SE. For 9K you're getting a better deal than if you bought a some other new car.
No problems whatsever. Our first model in 1986 got over 356K before it threw a rod. Not bad for a first year model. This model Engine is a genuine marvel and much more advanced. Expect it to hold up to at least 200k+ before you have to even consider replacing something. Then drive it another 200K.
Nissan is a company that is all about engines.
