Fuel/oil additives

Fuel/oil additives
I have a 1995 Maxima SE (5-speed). It has relatively low miles on it, just coming up to 52,000. I recently took it to a dealer for service for the first time in 4 years. In the interim, I changed the oil and filter on schedule and rotated the tires.
At the service, a fuel additive (2-part - an injector cleaner and moisture remover) and an oil additive were added. Are both of these necessary? I phoned around to a few dealerships and the jury was out on whether to use an oil additive, while most recommended the fuel additive. However, one dealership said why bother adding either if I could live without using the stuff so far. The fellow went on to say that he was skeptical as to how effective the injector cleaners were and depending on the oil additive more harm than good could potentially be done to the oil seals.
Any thoughts/experience on the subject!

from my experience, none of that stuff works. I have used many different fuel system cleaners and oil additives and they are nothing but garbage. The only oil additive i used that worked once on my old '88 Corolla was Lucas Oil Treatment. It helped stop the car from burning oil for only one oil change. after that it was a waste of money.

Does the type of gasoline make much difference as far as the cleanliness of the fuel injectors is concerned? I generally use 89 octane. A few years back a Nissan service rep told me to run a tank of premium through about every third tank as it would help keep the injectors clean. I did that for awhile. I live at sea level and do use premium when I am going into the interior of BC as I go over a mountain pass at about 5,000 feet elevation. I find the car runs better on high test when I am climbing for some time.
Any thoughts on octane to use and how effective higher octane is on fuel injector/engine cleanliness or is it just bafflegab?

Run nothing but 91+....I read a post a while back of a girl using 89 for the life of the engine and blew her engine at 100K...using 91 otcane is in the service manual and is very important

Thanks. I am not sure if Canadian gasoline is any different than US but my manual calls for 89 octane, not 91. Maybe I should up the octane. I have experienced running problems with other vehicles when I initially fill up in the US than the car gets used to it. I am not sure if the octane is on the same scale as in Canada.
