Perhaps get another opinion from a Nissan/Infinity dealer or trans shop? Maybe it's just something minor like a gear bearing, CV, or axel prob? The 5th gen tranny will fit but could be an overkill repair.

i have had several problems related to this, if its a bad wheel bearing like with my car, you should be able to grab on the wheel and be able to move the tire a little. like its loose a little.

week or two later my clutch just went out, and at present the car is just parked until i can afford the repairs.

Im planning to replace the tranny due to a bad synchronizer or something another. Maybe your problem is one of these?
