Top Speed?

Alright, ive got a question and i KNOW this is the place to get it answered!
I have heard a few differant things regarding the subject.
First, i heard the Maxima has a top speed limiter. what is it set at?
Second, i heard that the SE does not have a limiter. is this true?
Third, i have seen a mod where you splice a switch into the ECU harness to keep it from recieving the signal from the sender. does this work, and does it harm the engine?
Any info about this subject is welcome, thanks.

Only some GXE's have a top speed limiter. Read the FAQ's

The speed limiter for most maximas is set at 142mph. Personally I haven't done anything to change the speed limiter on my max and I have gotten' her to 153 mph on good 'ol Montana highways. I do however have an SE though, not sure about the other stuff you're asking but I know it doesn't hurt your max unless you make this a daily routine. Drive it like you stole it!

I don't think the 142mph limit is caused by a limiter, just the limits of the engine. The limiter (when equipped) is something a bit under 120mph. Your right that SE's don't have it (though personally I haven't tested that). The faqs have directions for removing the limiter.

ok... no one did 155 in thier maxima. Speedometers become more and more inaccurate with growing speed. it may of read 155 on your speedometer... but i can tell you that you didnt get that fast. Areodynamics, power, gearing, etc come into play at that speed.

I disagree. You have a strong argument, but I still think it is possible. especially down a long hill on a highway stretch.
don't forget to add some NOS and the hill, you'll be doin 180.
You're car will probably shake like a ****, but i'ts possible.

There are plenty of forced induction maximas that will, have, and do go over 155mph. Some speedometers have error in them and some do not. For instance at 148mph on a GPS my speedometer is reading just about exactly where 148mph would be. The general statement that all speedometers are off by huge amounts at high speeds is inaccurate. Some may be, while others may not be.

Oh, and to answer your questions. Only GXEs have actual speed limiters, and not even all GXEs have them. If you do have it, it will be around 116mph.

SEs dont have them, and neither do GLEs.

The speed limiter removal mod will not harm your engine. However if you leave it disconnected for more than about 15 minutes you will recieve a check engine light which could be annoying. Put it on a switch and only flip the switch when you want to exceed the limiter.

In case anyone cares, motor trend use a radar gun and got 142.1mph out of a 95 SE back in the day for a top speed shootout. Faster than the mustang 5.0 of the same year

i think the thing that is the gearing that keeps our 4th gens from doing 160 or so... but i could be wrong.

I remember that Motor Trend vividly. It was the most MPH for the money. Maxima was up there but the late Camaro won by hitting 155mph for what ever the stripped down Camaro was selling for.
This was one of the factors that swayed me to by my 97 Max back in Oct 96.
I still love it!
Can't wait to get my new Y-pipe on!

In my SE, my speedometer has reached 140. But I slowed down due to intense adrenaline fear.

I could only do 120 in my 97 gle. The car wouldn't go faster, this is stock. I have replaced the knock sensor, and put a straight pipe and a magnaflow exhaust. I wish I could test it now.....
