torn cv boot

well i just noticed that one of my cv boots is torn. the grease still looks clean but my car has about 190,000 miles. how long is the life of a cv shaft? i'm wondering if it would be worth it to just buy a new shaft instead of the boots.

Yes...much better to get a whole new shaft, IMHO.

If you happen to look at your CV boots daily, and they have just split yesterday then you would be safe installing new boots. If its been more than a week those bearings are likely cooked.
Just jack it up, remove the brakes, disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle and pull the axel out so you can disassemble it,thoroughly clean it and repack the bearings, install the new boots and finally reverse the process.
Do not use split boots. They will fail.

Now at 190k miles I'd be replacing the things. I wouldn't want to do that job twice.

Talk to Marty at Raxels 1-800-257-8192 and mention you are an Org member. Great guy and very good pricing on NEW - not reground assemblies.

Thats impressive.. you've been lucky to get that kind of mileage out of a splt boot. Usually the adhesive holding the "split" closed gets contaminated at install (dirt grease boogers) and lets go after a while.

This is one of those jobs I don't want to be doing more than once!

Cheers!

How long ago did this happen? What problems did he have?
I'm curious because till now I've heard nothing but good things about Raxels, and Marty has been fantastic to work with.
