Bumper Paint Discoloration

I have not seen this issue addressed in any prior posts (please point me in the right direction if it has). My '95 SE, always garaged and with only 16,500 miles, has some discoloration of the Arctic White paint on its bumpers. The rear bumper looks worse after recent mild polishing. I know that a flex agent is used when painting urethane, but this is really bugging me. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there alternatives to having the bumper(s) repainted? Am I crazy to think of asking Nissan to share in the expense (six years later)? As you can probably tell, this is really beginning to bug me. My Max is otherwise showroom condition.
Thanks. Phil
Thanks. Phil
I noticed that on my 97 neptune blue that the bumpers are different shades of blue than the rest of the car. I just figured that this was normal. I think it would be wishful thinking to ask the dealer to pay for a new paintjob.
Man, I didn't know if anyone else had this problem. My black '97s rear bumper is almost GRAY compared to the rest of the car in bright sunlight, I don't know what's up with it. It might have been re-painted (I'm the second owner) but I dunno. Anyone know what I can do...I've been thinking of getting it re-painted at a GOOD body shop cuz it bugs the hell out of me.
ah yes...nissan quality paint.
seen many maximas with the same problems.
my pebble beige max had the same.
my bumper was a orange color. i just got it repainted.
nissan paint = crappy
i posted this a lot time ago..and i remember reading the reason being is that nissan paint doesnt stick well to plastic...go fig?...

I guess I,m the only one with a positive response
My bumpers are fine on my 95 with about 70K. My left fender is a different story. It,s not OEM though and looks like sheet. Didn,t notice it until after it was waxed! Oh well.
Hi Phil,
This is a problem for most Japanese cars with painted bumper covers. Certain paint colors will fade sooner than others, depending on exposure to the sun. But the real kicker is car wash machines. They do a number on bumpers. So, I wash my car by hand most of the time, only relying on the car wash stations when the weather is super cold and my Maxima is very dirty.
If you get your bumper cover repainted at some point, make sure you get it Teflon coated. That will help protect it. But try to stay away from car wash stations, even if they claim to be "brushless". Brushless is better than brushed, but they still have abrasive action.
Regards,
Gary

Same here, my rear bumper is starting to fade out from the rest of my car. It has 125,000 on it and always kept outside, so I guess that is the reason. All is good though. Got a guy that will redo both bumpers, paint my body kit, paint my grill and door handles, and fix a dent for between 400 - 500 dollars. Yeah buddy. Anyways, Nissan paint just isn't good. Also, I do not think that they do the extensive prep work on the metal and plastics before they paint it like other car manufacturers do. Any solutions guys?
So, its not just me
Yeah-
Mine has the same problem with the Neptune Blue. My friend thought I was in an accident and that the body shop just did a horrible job repainting. It is kind of annoying to look at. Anywho, that's my story.

This is a common problem on Nissans. Aside from the bumper paint discoloration problem, the paint on my 95 Max chips easily too. Especially on the front hood and fender area. I also have chips on my spoiler too. Go figure.
Damn...it's not just me!!!
I have a Arctic White 97se. The rear bumper looks like a pearl grey. WTF!! Also as mentioned above, I have chips all over my car. I mean, little tiny chips (like from little tiny rocks from other cars kicking them up) which has chipped the paint down to the metal rusting it away. And some of them are in really odd places like the roof of the car, the spoiler, and on the back of the trunk next to the MAXIMA letters (how one got there?...
).
I say we all get together and file a complaint with Nissan of America. Maybe we can all get a free (yet another crappy paint job) from Nissan

i have a 97 GXE that is arctic white and mu bumbers are cream. i just bought the car and the lady i bought it from said she had zero accidents. i then noticed the discoloration a few days after the purchase and i thought she was BSing. but i guess the lady was true and just a crappy paint job.
