Can't check engine light myself!

I found another thing that I can add to my list of ever going problems with my car. I decided I will manually check the engine light because I've never done it since I got my 95 about a year ago. So I turn the key to the "on" position and I realized that the check engine light does not come on at all!! I thought that was a fluke so I tried it again. Nothing. Ok so the light won't come on so I can't check it manually. I took my car down to autozone to get it check for free and that too couldn't happen. I guess I have OBD1 and the unit they had can only read for OBDII. The only thing I can come up with is that either the bulb burned out or the previous owner (private sale) must have took the bulb out because the engine light was on and he wanted to sell it quickly. I don't want to bring it to the dealer and get screwed even if I don't have any codes. I guess the other thing I can do is check the voltage of the KS or take apart the dash and check the bulbs. What a pain.

The light isn't showing up cause either some dumbass mechanic took it out to make it seem like he fixed the problem. Another thing might be that the ECU screw isn't turned back all the way, taking away performance and the light.

Your car OBD II never heard of 4th gen OBDI. Pull your gauge cluster and check.

I was just going with whatever the guy at autozone said. If the 95 is OBDII, where can I find the connector so I can bring it back to autozone so they can check it. In the haynes manual, they showed a connector right next to the ecu but there wasn't one next to mine. There was a connector inside the fuse panel in the car though but the guy at autozone said that wasn't the right one for his device.

I think I saw a post a few days ago about the jack being in a wierd place on somebodies car (passenger side maybe?) since nissan was in the middle of the OBDI-II change. It was in regards to setting up a cable so he could always have his PDA attached to the ECU. Here's how to remove the gauge cluster http://www.geocities.com/amixam69/ni...ash/index.html.

the obdII connector is located on the passenger side of the ecu. if someone was in passenger side seat, it's to the left of where their feet would be and i believe it's a white connector. there should be a small sticker on the inside of your car telling you that, but stickers tend to disappear after a few years of driving. goodluck

Ok thanks guys. The OBDII connector is in the passenger side next to the ecu. I just noticed the sticker under the hood saying it is OBDII certified. Anyways I brought it back down to autozone and had one of the guys check it for me. The guy that was checking it gave me an attitude saying he can't check a 95 even though I told him it is OBDII. He says the device can read 96 and up and not 95. I couldn't see why since OBDII is OBDII period. Reluctantly he goes to my car and plugs in the device and he still tells me that he can't check it. I don't know who to call a dumba$$, me, the autozone guy, or the device he was using. Anyone else have a problem checking the ecu using a scan tool on a 95 max?

You can get some one in the dealership to check it. I got a hook up so I get it for free. They hook up to the connector in the fusebox.

Hey Big D your 100% correct, some ba$tard took out the bulb for the check engine light. I took apart the dash and all the bulbs were there except the check engine light bulb. I pulled the codes and what do you know, I got 3 codes. 0302 Egr insufficient or excessive flow detected, 0304 knock sensor, 0707 downstream oxygen sensor. Now the 0707 code, is this the one near the cat converter or the one on the y pipe? I guess i'll do oxygen sensor first before the knock sensor and try to clean out the egr valve/tube.

0707
"0707" which points to the rear Oxygen Sensor.

Your Maxima has three Oxygen Sensors. Two are front sensors, mounted in
the Y-pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the Catalytic Converter. One
is a rear sensor, mounted in the exhaust pipe downstream of the Cat.

When both front Oxygen Sensors are operating normally the rear sensor serves only to keep tabs on the Catalytic Converter. That's the reason your engine is running well. The Engine Control Module (the computer) is not using the signal from the rear sensor to control engine management functions.

For more information about Oxygen Sensors go to
http://www.volksparts.com/o2sensors.htm

For specific information about replacing Oxygen Sensors on your Maxima see
the Chilton manual (page 4-13) or the Haynes manual (page 6-14).

In a different thread SprintMax said he got a great price on a replacement factory Oxygen Sensor from Vester Nissan. He didn't give a location or contact information. Perhaps he was referring to Vester Nissan of Clinton NC, 1-800-572-2005. Also www.buyoxygensensors.com

0302
Diagnostic Trouble code 0302 points to a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system. The malfunction is detected by the Engine Control Module when no EGR flow is detected under conditions which call for EGR. Possible causes include:
- The electrical harness or connectors (valve circuit open or shorted)
- The EGR valve is stuck closed
- Weak or dead battery
- The EGR passage is clogged
- Faulty EGR temperature sensor circuit
- A leak somewhere in the exhaust system

The EGR Volume Control Valve may be tested with an ohmmeter. Disconnect the electrical connector. Looking at the connector half which is attached to the EGRVCV with the latch at the 12 o'clock position you will see two rows of three terminals. The top row is numbered 1-3, right to left. The bottom row is numbered 4-6, right to left. Measure the resistance between these terminal pairs:
2 1
2 3
5 4
5 6
... all resistance values should be 20.9-23.1 ohms at 68 degrees F.

Reconnect the EGRVCV connector halves. Turn the ignition switch ON OFF repeatedly. Verify that the EGRVCV shaft moves smoothly forward backward according to the ignition switch position.

The Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor may be tested with an ohmmeter. The specifications are ...
- at 32 degrees F, 0.68-1.11 Megohms
- at 122 degrees F, 0.09-0.12 Megohms
- at 212 degrees F, 0.017-0.024 Megohms
