Finished LED tails. (Pics)

Yeah, I know I'm just like everyone else now, but you know what. You can kiss my *** if you don't like em. Cause I do like em.

I went an extra step and tinted the whole lens on the inside with tint spray. I love the look.

It looks real good on 97-99 tails. On 95-96 reflector messes up things, but I still love mine, gotta redo them a little though, and tint too.

How much time it took you?

It took more time than I thought. The labor of building the boards themselves was not so bad, but it took forever for a local place to order my resistors. Took them almost 3 months, but it was worth the wait cause I got them for virtually nothing. If I had all the parts, and the time to work on them, they would only take a few days to complete. I'm considering making inserts for those of you who want to just open up your lenses and throw them in, but I'm still giving it much thought. They wouldn't be cheap, but they wouldn't be as much as Arrafio is charging either. It also keeps me from damaging other's lenses accidently. I'll think about it.

David

PS, Thanks for all the positive feedback guys.

I just want to give Araffio the credit for these. He was the first, and from the time I saw them, I just had to do em. Props man.

Looks good... just a question: Im pretty sure it's illegal to have tail's that aren't red / have white light... something to that extent ( i don't remember the specifics).

But would it be legal to make a few of the LED's a different color in there? Blue per say (if it were green then you'd have a christmas theme going on ...)

Just a thought.. some may call it rice.. i'd call it unique .. either way i was just wondering on the legallity of the above thought...

if someone wants to try it.. send me pics first cause i thought of it. (oh and lemme get some credit)

- replies needed.

You have to remember that LEDs are very concentrated in the terms of light output. A blue LED here or there would not look right. From a far distance, you'd notice the blue slightly, but it would be a definite blue. It wouldn't make the overall light output look purple or anything.

As for my tails, I did some research before doing them the way I did. To put a cover or tint the outside of the lens, that would be illegal. BUT.... If you tint the inside of the lens, it is still legal here in TX. The reason is that the law says you can not have any cover over the tail lights that obstructs the clear view of the tail light. The law also says that there have to be 2 red reflectors, one on each side of the vehicle, that reflect a red color at night. If you tint the outside of the lens, it would be a dark dark red that reflected. My way, the lens still reflects red as it did the day I bought the car because there is no film in between the reflector and the light source. Also, there is no visible cover, so if I get pulled over, I'm not getting a ticket for that.

I don't think that would be legal. In tx, you would get your @ss pulled over in a flash. The light that it emitted from the car is what counts. If you have different types of light emitted from the blinker light (must be amber or red), you will get a ticket.

d_warner also pointed out that the reflectors must be red and only red. To obstruct that with different color lights is asking for trouble.

I wouldn't want the whole tail to be a different color. i would still want it to emit a red light to stick with the law. However (Perhaps this would take custom lightwork... maybe even another trigger/button to control this) i would want a section or area of the tail light to have blue LED's ... maybe 1 blue 1 red (pattern).. or maybe have the upper part of the tail light with blue LED's that can be turned on / off when wanted from inside the car...

blah its 4:40 am ... maybe ill draw out what i mean in photoshop later...

peace

That would be possible. I made LED flashing modules for my patrol car with the left over LEDs that I had. I must say that those absolutely rock as well. If you wanted, you could hook a similar flasher like the Able 2 LED strobe style flasher up to a seperate set of LEDs in the tail lights that would flash and look kinda like these guys who put strobes in their headlights. It's just not my style. I tell you what. I just located white LEDs at a pretty cheap price, and I will be re-doing my back up lights. I will hook a flasher up to them just to make you happy. It will be a while though, so be patient.

Lol sounds good... I don't want a full blown disco or laser light show out of my maxima (although that would have its benefits... lol) but i would definitly like to see what that looks like. Keep me posted and PM me with progress lol.

- Good luck. (if i'm not feeling lazy today i'll make a few pics of what i was thinking).
