neutral safety switch.......uh.........

Ok so my car is throwing off and on a p1706 which boils down to a neutral safety switch. Has anyone replaced theirs??? If so how hard was it. Also if it finally goes out what trouble will it provide to me?
BTW- I am a 5 speed.

Neutral safety switch is also called reverse position switch. What it does it reads the tranny when you shift in reverese and switches on the back up lights. Check if they work when you are in reverse. If they do, then there really is no need to replace it, unless that check engine lights bugs you too much.
