Cost for Knock Sensor and o2 replacement

I just ran the diagnostics on my check engine light and came up with knock sensor and right front 02 sensor. Dealer quoted me $280 for the KS and $250 for the o2 sensors installed and said they may need to reprogram the ecu after the 02 to the tune of $80.

I am a little handy but have no time to diy. Are those fair prices? The mileage on the car is 84,400 should I have them do the tune up service as well. plugs, fluids and inspection of brakes etc. for $300. Oh yeah I just bought the car yesterday, with no service records.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

KS - parts cost 130
O2 - parts cost (for 2 sensors) 150

So you are paying 250 in labor - you can probably do the work yourself in 2-3 hours - assuming minimal experience with this stuff... better yet, you may be able to find a local org member who will do it for you for less than 250... I'm not local - or I would have done it for you.

The prices are "fair" as long a you are willing to pay them.. the dealer has standard prices for everything... they just look in their books and it says 3 hours of labor for XYZ and thats what they quote you - even if their techs can get it done in 10 minutes... I would imagine it will take them no more than 1.5 hours to replace the O2 sensors and knock sensor...

It would be worthwhile to get the tune-up given you don't know the service history of the car... items to do include, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, trans flush, radiator flush... other optional items - throttle body cleaning... I doubt the 300 dollars you were quoted included all this.

Note you can do much of this yourself in a short time... there is plenty of help, instructions and guidance available on these forums...

Good luck.

Reprogram the ECU? Wha??? Get the O2 sensor and install it yourself($65). Reset the ECU and the KS code will probably disappear.

just bought the KS sensor at IRA Nissan in Tewksbruy for 165. Going to replace it now (after engine ccols down).

i'll let u know how easy it was.

From all i read it is most likly the ks sensor causing the o2 to trip.

the ks sensor sends a ghost signal to the EUC. meaning it will not trip the CEL on the dash.

lots of information on this subject

First off, every KS I priced has been over $200. However, I have a friend who is a mechanic and can get it for $120. Second, whoever said they only paid 68 or 69 I find very hard to believe because even if the guy didn't charge you anything for labor, I find it hard to believe you got a hook up on a KS for less than $70. Now, for the O2 the 2 upstream ones normally range between $50 - $80 but the downstream is over $100, but then again if you got a hookup or two, I'm sure you can get them all for around 50 - 80. O2's are a piece of cake. Knock is a pain because you prolly gonna need 2 double jointed sockets and a long magnet and so forth, but good luck with whatever you decide to do.

PS: I would never pay 300 to have my plugs, fluid changed and brakes checked. That's nothing and if you're handy like you say...Plugs are ridiculously easy and so is fluid. Brakes if you got all disc brakes aren't all that hard neither.

From all i read it is most likly the ks sensor causing the o2 to trip.
Exactly.

Thanks

Thanks everyone,

I'm gonna check with zack and try his mechanic out. Sounds like an honest and most importantly a reasonably priced independent mechanic in my area.

Thanks again,

Mark E.

There is actually a group deal right now that gets you 15% off. As for what Gecko said, why would that happen? A KS doesn't affect the O2 sesnsor, only reason O2 sensors go bad is because they lose the sensitivity and can't function properly.

If you're nearing 100k then yes. I just ordered mine even though I have no code, I'm pretty sure it's almost dead any way. I replaced the other one eariler cause it actually threw a code. I wouldn't replace them every 30k or anything.

Bosch is actually OEM for us, our cars came with OEM from the factory. Bosch plugs suck, O2 sensors don't.

I need the CA-emissions front right heated sensor. If bosch is OEM, why are the denso and walker ones listed as OEM, and why does the walker and denso have only 3 wires, while the bosch has 4?

On that site OEM simply means it's plug and play. The OEM ones come with the connectors and the universal ones don't, you have to cut the one that's on the car right now and splice the new one into it.

right, i understand the meaning of OEM. My question is: How can they all be OEM, yet each have a different number of wires? Check out the site to see what i'm talking about. I can't post the actual link because of the stupid CGI prog.

Put in for a 99 max, california emissions, and see what i mean.
