This may have been discussed before, but I could not find it in the archives.

My '95 Maxima GXE w/93K and no mods.

Observed:

"Normal" engine temp. was for over 6 trouble-free years right in the middle between the Hot and Cold marks on the temp. gauge. Recently engine temp. became "sluggish" -- either slow to reach its normal temp or never reaching it
completely. It would often go down at cruising speeds to half or less its normal reading.

"Check Engine" light came on shortly after engine temp abnormal behavior started. I Followed the prescribed procedure to read the ECU codes which turned to be:

34 - Knock Sensor
86 - EVAP Canistur Purge Control Valve/Solenoid Valve (?)

No other symptoms. Car drives as usuall.

Performed Tune Up: New spark plugs, air filter, gas filter and pcv valve (Nissan parts). Also changed radiator fluid. All these resulted noticeable performance improvement.

Reset ECU per procedure. Check Engine light stayed off for 10 days (normal driving). Check Engine light came back up yesterday - same codes (34 and 86)

Questions:

1. If a Knock Sensor goes bad, shouldn't the ECU pick it up immediately after erasing the stored faults?
2. Another Nissan list showed code 86 to be "Fuel Injection System Function Right Hand Bank" (which would make more sense). Which is the right interpretation for this year model ('95)
3. It was suggested that the thermostat is stuck open. Any other possible reason for change in engine temp?

Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated,

Ilan.

If the thermal stat is stuck open then yes it would take longer to reach normal temp.

As for knock sensor... if I remember correctly, that doesn't not always mean teh sensor is bad... if knock was detected I believe the light will come on as well.

As for the other code, I don't know about that one, I'd have to go home and look at my service manual.

No, not if the problem is intermittent.

There is no "right interpretation". The Diagnostic Trouble Code merely points you in a general direction and says "look for trouble in that neighborhood." Consider the Oxygen Sensor and the fuel injectors as possible trouble spots.

The gauge is either lying or telling the truth. If the gauge is wrong, check the sending unit and the gauge itself. If the gauge is right, check the thermostat.
