I just picked up my 97 Max SE Monday. My wife has been driving it . In the morning on cold starts the car shutters and eventually stalls out , sometimes when we start it the car starts to rev itself (no we didn't touch the throttle )all this happens when it's first started in the morning. I was wondering if this is a common problem , and if so what can be done about it.Other than that I love the car. I'm taking it back to the dealer tonight .

The car will normally idle at about 1500 rpm when you first start it up in the morning... then slowly drop down to a normal idle after a few minutes...

Possible problems may include the cold start injector or some other sensor... I think Daniel could help you out better...

I don't think it's the valves though because you would be losing oil and seeing white smoke from the tail pipe...

Please be sure your dealer checks the Idle Air Control Valve - Auxiliary Air Control valve. That's the part which controls the idle speed, in response to signals from the Engine Control Module (the computer). There are other engine parts which play a part, but this is the first thing to examine.

No cold start injector on 4Gen

Some engines use a cold start injector but our 4Gen Maxima does not. The rich mixture needed for cold starting and smooth operation during warm-up is provided by the Engine Control Module (the computer). It gives longer "on pulses" to the fuel injectors. The ECM knows if the engine is cold by the signal it receives from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.
