July 2004 Car and Driver magazine has an article about HIDS and sights the 5th gen Max as the car most sought after by HID thieves.

I assume it's not because it has great HIDs, but because they're easy to steal?

No only are they easy to steal but if you read in the hidfourm.com, the hids in the maxima are one of the most colorful kits. Plus they are nice and small but still give off a great beam pattern.
