Another "stick" question/comment

Hi everyone.
No long intros here, got my 5 speed 3 months ago and never drove stick before then. Always tried to switch at 2K rpm to save the gas. Now, since i'm still new to stick and dont shift well, but what I discoverd on my max that if you switch gears at just above 2K rpms (i do at 2250 or so) and it seems to shift VERY smoothly, just like auto o.O

But then again, friend came from iraq for 2 weeks and after he saw me shift at 2k rpms, he said its bad for transmision and if I keep on doing it, it will kill the trany. Now he aint the stick man himself, since he had auto, but that still got me thinking. Could it be true? o.O

thnkx for your input

Sounds stupid to me but I have an auto as well. As long as you don't stall at a low RPM it should be fine. I notice that whenever I drive my with cousin and he's not in a hurry to get anywhere, I notice he shifts as soon as possible to get into last gear. Keep in mind he's never owned an AUTO his hole life and he's been driving stick since he was 13.

i do not see why shifting your manual at alittle above 2000 would hurt anything. it would prob last longer cause you are nbtoputting any strain on the transmission than what is is made for. you will be fine just shift how you want. there is no correct time or when to shift just do it at your own time and pace.

Yeah I shift at like 2300 when im driving leisurely and to save gas, which is not that often...

Although, going up a hill the car seems to run much better when you shift quite a bit later than 2300. Going down a hill it feels better when you shift earlier.

If you shift too soon going uphill, your just lugging it and making you're Max do more work then neccesary. You're wasting more gas too. As far as when to shift, listen to your engine, it'll tell you wen it wants you to shift. For daily driving I've never looked at the tach, just shifted by sound and feel.

The engine is too quite to hear anything :looks around:
But friends 'theory' is that if I shift at low (aka 2K) rpms, it puts more tention on the trany therefore hurting it. When he gets back, he wants to get a RSX stick, so i dont know, we'll see...

Also, on the side note, can 4th Gen stock 5 speed SE take on stock 2002 RSX Type-S? o.O Just dont feel like making a new post

You shouldn't have any problems with shifting at 2k unless, like stated earlier, you are going uphill. I haven't had the pleasure of beating up on an RSX, but I have nailed a couple of Type-R Integras. They should be very comparable. Become more comfprtable with your stick and your car before you play too hard with these. While yes you can beat them, never underestimate them. Especially if the driver is reckless.

shifting like that is fine, but I would only do it when driving at a very leisurely pace, no more than 1/3 throttle. Otherwise, you bog the engine down and do put a little more stress on the tranny. IMO.

I shift like that when I'm being real calm about it (like with old relatives in the car). You should try shifting Higher once in a while though, you'll fall in love with your car all over again .

2k is a *little* on the low side and concerns about lugging the engine if you're going up a hill are reasonable.

I _seriously_ doubt you're going to save that much gas shifting at 2k instead of 3k anyway.

well is it bad that I shift at 3,500-4,000 during regular everyday driving?

^ Not that bad, just a waste of gas and unnecessary wear on the engine.

I think 3k is a reasonable "everyday" shift point...2k seems a little low and 4k seems a little high.

No.
It will not hurt a thing.
If it was auto and you were not driving it hard, it would probably shift before that point anyway. Does that mean it is bad for the tranny? No way.

Just shift like you have been doing, don't slip the clutch, don't dump the clutch, and you ought to be all right.

BTW, Your 5MT max should take the RSX. They are not as fast as you would think. YOu will have a better chance from a stop than from a roll, because his car will have more power high end than yours, probably.

Also, I didn't think they made the type S in 2002.
