I did some REAL stupid ****....

Ok, I was about the get off the freeway so i was going about 60 mph. I decided to shift the car into neutral for the hell of it. I pushed to far and the car tried to go into reverse. There was a tug and I lost power steering. I pulled over, turned the car off. Tried to turn it back on and it wouldnt start. Let it sit for a minute and everything seems to be fine now.

How much damage did I just do to my tranny?

Oh and yes, I know it was extremely retarded, you don't need to tell me.

don't worry about it....the car has an auto cut off for that so nothing bad happends. It happened to me once too. not exactly like that, lets just say my ex did it on accident trying to hold my hand the car shuts power to the engine, and keeps it from eating the tranny into little pieces and blowing the motor.

when i shift to neutral on freeway down hills, i just push the shifter up, no need to press the button. that way it won't go into reverse accidently. i found out that you don't need to press the button when: going to N from D or D to N, going fron R to N and/or D, going from 1 or 2 UP to D (need to press the button to go down)

why are you pushing the button on the shifter? the shifter goes from drive to neutral just by pushing the stick up. dont use the button

why would you shift into neutral? Are you just using it for the engine braking?

A.) Yea....don't press the button...

B.) I love you AT guys who feel the need to goof around with your transmission while you're driving. What is shifting into neutral going to accomplish, other than making you even more unprepared if you had to hit the gas in some type of emergency situation? You're not getting engine braking in Neutral, so what the hell is the point of doing it? At a stoplight, okay, but on the highway?? LOL....next time buy an MT!

Yes - whats the story with shifting into neutral... is definitely isn't giving you any engine braking... and as for the habit at doing it at stop lights, I wonder if that may actually be worse for the tranny since you are constantly engaging/disengaging it each time you shift between D and N (and back to D)... Just leave it in D, and keep your foot on the brake... or get a 5spd (not that I should talk - since I have the automagic)
