I don't usually post race stories - 99 SE vs. Civic Si

As you all know, I own a bone stock (performance wise) 5-spd 99 SEL.

So here I am last night coming home from a party at 2 am (I know, don't laugh - I had work in the morning ). I'm heading 294 South, a little pass the airport, no cars around, and I'm doing about 80 mph. Then, I pass a black, souped-up Civic Si. I couldn't exactly tell what he had, but here's what I know:

1) it was a 5-spd
2) exhaust work - performance muffler and probably other **** because it was extremely loud and I could hear his every shift precisely even with the music on
3) custom lighting all throughout
4) lowered
5) heavy tints

As I passed, he suddenly got the urge to speed up and catch up. Then he downshifted and flew pass me. So now I'm thinking "here we go"!

Anyway, I align next to him and we're both doing approx. 75-80. Then he revs his engine a few times, which I thought meant "let's race" and sure enough it did. Now after watching too many racing videos, I hunk...

...once,
...twice,
...and off we go on three

well, to my surprise we are head to head at 80, 85, 90, and then not until 95+ do I start pulling away from the bastard. By 100 I have him by about a car and a half. We hit 110, 115, 120, I'm thinking "omfg, this guy just doesn't give up" so I keep going - 125, 130, and now I have him by like 4 full car lengths and that's we he finally eases.

Before I knew it I was doing close to 135 mph! Kind of scary now that I think about it, but it all happened so fast!

I did everything I could - I guess I kind of underestimated the Civic Si - what do you think?
I do think it was a big mistake for me to start off in 4th. Like I said earlier, we started off somewhere in the 75-80 range. I should've been in 3rd then because I remember hitting 90 mph at the track while still in 3rd. You guys think that would have made a difference?

In the end, I don't know what to think. I thought I would totally waste the guy, but he put up a good fight. Based on the description of the race, would you consider this winning on my part or a disgrace?

Thats the only place theses cars will have a slight chance, on the highway. If you raced him from a standstill, it wouldnt have been worth the gas.

maxdaddy is right, the newer civic si's are way quick for what they are. a friend of mine always tries to race me in his when he knows ive witnessed him run a 14.2 at the track with not much money invested at all. but top-end highway, i slowly but surely walk on him.

I think you miss understood my post, I meant the maxima would have crushed the civic from a stop. This is assuming it wasnt a newer one, which I have both never driven, nor raced, like I have the older ones.

You probably should have dropped it into 3rd gear and run it up to 90 mph or more. Not sure what speed you'd be going at say 6,000 rpm.

i think the 99-00 si's run around 15.6 stock and the newest ones are suposidly slower...i dunno my friends got a 00 with bolt ons, stage 2 clutch...i drove his after drivin the max all day and it didnt feel quick at all, hes got a greddy turbo kit waitin to go in but hes a horible driver so i think i'll still run with him

it seems only the ones that know what thier doing can get hondas to be fast, i raced a boxy style 4dr civic with a turbo ls integra motor in it on the highway, i flew by him at first, he got on my bumper at around like 100 or so, i left it in 5th and started walkin away in 5th with 2 other people in the car....

anyway...good kill....

I raced my friends SI froma roll @ 40 3 times and felt really bad for him. So I wont do it again. Its sad b/c he wanted to buy a really fast car. I like SI's (looks) they are just overrated

Yes, I also heard somewhere that although fast for a civic, the old Si's did 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, as compared to approx. 6.6 in a 5-spd 4th gen Maxima.

my friend has a 2000 civic si stock, and my max is auto and at the time i was stock without my exhaust i have now, and from dead stop, i was never in jeopardy of losing. those b16 1.6 liter motors put out horspower, but the vtec isnt coming out til high up in the rpm band, and they dont make ish for torque. if you lose to an Si, even with an "Exhaust" (i say it like that because around my town, they're all soup cans with 8 inch tipped mufflers), give your max away to someone else who deserves it. Even the 2002 Si's with the k20 motor dont put out better numbers, just a better engine to build up. Si's = poo

isn't vtec always engaged? variable valve time electronic control? i do nto know much about ti but i thought it was on all the time to where they get the mst efficentcy out of there engines, and have a solid rev.

no, it's always "on", but im saying the vtec power kicks in higher up in the rpms. Thats when you really feel the difference between a vtec and regular honda motor. It starts to pull hard at around 6500 from my experience of driving one

What eckohb is sayin is true, unless he has a Vtec controller which taps into the vtec and the driver can control when the Vtec kicks in. I have been a few Crapply riced civics and crx's but vtec controller helps a little for faster pick up in mid range.

Just my .2$

Dont forget guys that there are 3 different types of VTEC. VTEC-E, for economy...shutting down one valve for gas savings. Then there's the regular VTEC that everyone talks about....where the valves run on more agressive cam profiles, around 5200 rpms or something. Then there is a combo of the 2, high performance gas saver. Whooo whooo.

That SI has the regular DOHC VTEC, and yes it helps with performance, but it still doesnt have jack for torque. I still love it though b/c with all of hondas amaizing technology its still nothing special. It needs to be in the high revs to make decent power. Oh and they are governed at 123 or something, well my buds is. Still a pretty quick car IMO they just need some torque.

I would pay good money to see a stock Si run 15.6 seconds. Half the time the Si's I see with i/h/e can't even break out of the 16's.

Max and Si are similar in performance, but you stand a much better chance of winning in a maxima all things being equal. The stock honda clutches are made of balsa wood. 90% of the owners can't launch anyway. And 3rd gear (civic's 3rd cripples it) = bye bye honda unless he has a power adder.

Really? Wow that's faster than I think...6.6 sec. What about an auto?
