Cigarette lighter not working when car off

Hey guys,

I'm not sure if this is a problem, as maybe it was designed to be like this .. however... My cigarette lighter doesn't work when the car is off. I was trying to charge my phone and as soon as I turned the car off, the light went out on the phone charger ... Is it supposed to turn off with the car? Could it be some kind of low battery protection?

In any case, anyone know how to fix it so the cig lighter is always on?

Thanks,
Steve

That's normal. Your glove compartment light is the same way.

Um, why? I have mine rewired when I need to charge my phone or mp3 player when not in the car. Sure beats leaving the keys in the ignition...

well, if you were to accidently forget for a long time and drain your battery, then it will be a real PITA.

well. if your like me and you tapped into your cig lighter for a 12v source, which many people do, to power fancy lights, radar detectors, air filters, etc...i want that crap all not to be on if the cig lighter isn't on .

This is normal for the Maxima/Infiniti, and for most Japanese cars. I also wanted to keep my cell phone charged so rewired the cigarette lighter. Substituting battery 12 volt power for the normal ignition power is all it took. Make sure you put an inline fuse in the new 12 volt circuit.
"Allways on" 12 volt power can be tapped off of the fuse block under the dash board.
