Auto Transmission - Abrupt Shifting

Recently bought a 96 Infinity I30t with auto transmission -115k. The transmission shifts abruptly from gear to gear (not at all smooth), and definitely not seamless. Wondering if this is normal, or a sign of the transmission failing, or if I should consider changing the transmission fluid (looks fairly clean), or???

At 115K you should change the fluid regardless. The harsh shifting maybe be caused by a few things, not usually a sign of failure. Does the speedometer work OK? Could be a bad tranny controller or there's a resistor in the engine compartment that will cause harsh shifting if it's disconnected. Some people do it on purpose to make them shift harder.

i have the same problem with 1-2, did a google search, some peopel have had it since 30k miles and now bordering on 100k, i only have 66k, it started at around 56, might be the VB, but i dont think its a sign of failure, or i hope not

check the drop resistor with ohm meter it should read ~ 12.8 ohms.
Mine went bad , tranny was shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and when shifting from P to D there was lund "thunk"
I got the check engine light with 1205 code ( line pressure solenoid ) - i've got it changed but it wasn't a problem.
check the resistor first before you open up that tranny.

Nick.

Thanks for the replies. Should have mentioned I don’t know a hell of a lot about this “stuff”, especially when you start talking about resistors, controllers, solenoids, etc.

Anyway I can say the speedometer works ok, and the abrupt shifting can happens in gear. Check engine light not on. Guess I will change the tranny fluid first and if that don’t fix it, will end up at the shop.
