Is skipping gears, like going from 2nd to 4th, bad for ur tranny for any reason?
Also, I often drive in 5th other than on residential streets. I now have a problem shifting into 5th, if the rev is too high it grinds. Is this because 5th gear has been used to much? Is it bad to "over use" 5th gear?

Skipping gears should not be any problem, unless you are forcing the stick into the gear when the rpms are not lined up correctly. This will cause your syncros to go bad, and you will not be able to shift into some gears. It should not be a problem though.
5th cannot be used too much, I don't think. I have a 99, and my car is like new.
You sound like you are forcing it into gear at the wrong rpm. When the rpms are correct for that gear, the stick will just fall into place with light pressure. You should not have to force it.

skipping gears is not bad. Drivers do it if for example if in second gear you have taken the rpm too high switch to fourth to even out rpm with tranny gearing. Because putting it in third would make the car bog and you would loose some momentum.

"putting it in third would make the car bog and you would lose some momentum"?????? How could this be? I mean, putting it in 4th from 2nd would make it bog, not in third.
Also, if you bog 5th, it could be bad for the car. I don't think it would be bad for the tranny, but it would not be the greatest for your car.....mostly just gas mileage.

That Skip shift is based on throttle position not revs. If you are flooring it, it won't skip the gear. If you are driving lot Granny then the skip shift feature kicks in.
The problem I am having with 5th gear is a wear problem, because I didnt have it before. Basically, if I shift into 5th and the rpm is about 3k, it will grind. So when I do shift into 5th, I just leave it in nutral until the rev gets down to idle then shift. Other wise it grinds. I think I may need to change the gear lube which leads to a new question. Are you suppose to change the gear lube and if so after how many miles? From the factory, the lube is sythetic right?
Are you talking about transmission fluid? I don't believe its synthetic from the factory. I think it should be changed at around 60,000 miles. My manual doesn't recommend a change interval, just periodic inspection of it.

No its not bad, i do it all the time. Leaving my neighborhood I normally go 1-2-4 or so.
The last gen f-bodys/vettes do the 1-4 shift thing for improved city mileage.

Don't know about syncros for the Max, but my friend's 95 Altima need new syncros for 3rd and 4th gear and they go for $60 each from the dealer. Just so you have a reference as to how much they are more or less.
