95 Maxima will not start
The problem is the starter itself. I read all the threads on how-to and starter replacement... but I am curious about something.
When I was at the store and the car would not start, I called CAA, and when the guy got there he was able to get the starter going by hitting something on the starter with a long metal rod.
The starter would only click when I cranked the ignition, but when he started banging on this thing, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME I was cranking the ignition, the car started to turn over and then it started!!!
But WHAT was he banging on?? I came home and tried the same thing on the starter and it did not work... I must be hitting the wrong spot. Does anyone have any ideas?
Secondly, should I bother getting this starter rebuilt or should I just buy a new one?
Thanks.

What the CAA person did was a trick to get the started to start, you can get the max to start my tapping the starter with a metal rod while cracking, I think this works on 5-speeds only not too sure thought. You werent able to do it because I'm assuming you tapped on it then got in a tried to start it, the tappin on it needs to occur at the same time as cracking.
I believe a rebult started is as good as a new one assuming the rebuilt one was done correctly. Depends on wheather you can afford a new one (about $140 - $200) from auto store.
Also not sure if you knew but you can pop the clutch to get the car started if you trying to get home and the car wont start, this also works with a dead baterry (which I actually didnt know till I was told a few weeks back). If you can get her started again, just get her at a decent roll, a few miles per hour, put her in first and come off the clutch, she should fire right up.
good luck with the starter.

I tried push starting it and it did not work, but I think I was doing it wrong.
As for tapping the starter, I got sick of bashing it so I just took the starter out. I am having it rebuilt tomorrow.

I guess you can't really go wrong... we'll see how it turns out.
Thanks for the advice!
