Exhaust question: whats INSIDE the flex pipe?
#1
I was doing some things on my car today, and happened to take a look at the flexpipe on my stock 96 gxe 5-speed... and i noticed to my dismay that the woven metal flex pipe is completely torn. the flexible part, as im sure everyone knows, is about 8" long, and in my case the end closest to the front of the car is completely torn and not attached all the way around... my question is this: is there something inside the flexpipe or is this effectively a HUGE hole in my exhaust? thanks in advance.

The flex sections are made up of a woven stainless steel wire cover with a flat corrugated flex tube inside.
There are some flex sections on the market now with a layer of loose stainless wire on the inside as well which is supposed to get rid of the bees in a can sound, but because it is on the inside it reduces the diameter of the flex section and probably reduces the flow. We are going to flow test the two types to see how they compare.
We see lots of flex sections where the braided cover has torn or worn through.
