changing out downstream o2 sensor

will an upstream sensor work just as well to replace a downstream o2 sensor?
my CEL keeps throwing, and it says 0510 and 0512, both voltage probs w/the downstream o2. I was on Ebay, and I see the upstream o2's, but no downstreams. So I'm asking if it really matters if I just use an upstream and plug it into the downstream socket...It seems to me like it should work but just to make sure.....
