going to change my front pads soon, looking for tips

I just got some Raybestos QS Pads as part of the GD, and I'm go ing to switch em out on Friday. I'm looking for any suggestions you can give to make this easy and successful. I'm going to buy some anti-squeal goo and jackstands tomorrow. I got some 'universal brake lube' in the pacage, but it's a pretty small tube. How much do I need. I don't want any squeal at all...that's what I hate about my brakes right now. Thanks in advance.

Get a big bottle of the brake goo, it's not expensive. Use a ton of it, it won't hurt anything. You might want to call the dealer and see if you can buy just the shims -- mine had almost disintegrated. They wanted to sell me the entire hardware kit, which costs like $50 and has more than you need. Apart from that, use the write up at motorvate.ca. It's excellent and will tell you everything you need.

YOu get shims with the Raybestos QS pads. Also, the goo that you get should be more than enough for you to do the job correctly.

just take your time and do it right. PLEASE be sure to PUMP THE PEDAL UP when you're done, before starting the car. you wouldn't believe how quick a car moves after doing the brakes, if you don't have pedal pressure!!!

When you put new pads in, are you supposed to break them in? or is that just with new rotors?

You do need to break them in. The process is called "bedding", and you can find out to do it easily with a google search for "bedding brake pads".

Few more questions...the Haynes Manual says to coat the caliper pin with high temp grease...would any auto store have this? And I'm a little confused over the process of applying the anti-squeal compound. it says to apply it to the back of both pads, but I thought that's where the shims were, so where exactly do you put it?
Thanks

Ryan

How about the rear breaks? i also got brakes from this group deal, bought them both fron and rear. i how to the how to do's, but i think the link is not working. i have also been to other sites, but couldn't find info about it. I mean i guess it can't be that much different from the front ones, but you never know that's why i ask thank you

For the rears make sure you have the tool to rotate the piston back into the caliper, i got mine from Pep Boys for like $5.

Any auto store would have the grease. Just ask them where it is. It'll come in a can, and it's fairly cheap.

Shims are used to accomplish the same thing as the goo does, but it usually doesn't work as well. Put some in between the pad and the shim, and you can also put it on the back of the shim if you want to. It won't hurt anything.

to "break in" the pads correctly, do as follows:
1. you don't want to brake really hard for like the first 250 miles
2. right after you put them on, go out and get up to about 40, then brake moderately hard down to 20
3. While never stopping, get up to 50 and then brake down to 20...
4. Still don't stop, and get up to 60, brake down to 20 moderately...
5. Still don't stop, and get up to 70, then brake down to 20.

**the reason you don't want to stop while you are doing this, is it allows the heat to be dispursed over the whole pad evenly. After you are done with this, you should be ready to just drive. Remember, don't brake really hard for like 250 miles. Then, you should be good to do whatever with them.

Hope this helps.

And do you have to change the brake fluid? Is it recommended with every brake change?
