To buy or not To buy

Hello everyone,
I am thinking about buying 1999 Maxima GXE with 54000 miles on it. (I used to have 1994 Maxima GXE).
Can you tell me what I need to watch for? I’ve heard 4-th generation Maxima have coil ignition problems is it true?
Any help will be big help.
Thank you.

The obvious things are to check for collision damage. Every body panel is marked with the VIN, so if you see any of the tags missing, then you know it's had a moderate accident. Stand back and look at the paint and make sure all the body panels match. Best do look at it with some sunlight shining on the car.

Things I look for are:

- RUST
- Oil or other Fluid Leaks
- Service Records
- Carfax History (not a forsure thing, but better than nothing). It can show failed emissions tests, accidents, vehicle service records, etc.
- How clean the car is can tell a lot about how it's been kept up in terms of maintenance. You can't just refurbish a trashed car - looks at the carpet, seats, the undercarriage, etc.
- Brakes
- Check Engine / ABS / Air Bag lights while driving? - Could be a costly repair if so.

I just bought a 95 Maxima SE 5-Speed and thankfully I lucked out. I bought it off of Ebay and it's in excellent condition. It's a rust free Colorado car, and now a rust free California car.

Things can fail on any vehicle - but a coil pack or knock sensor would not deter me from buying the car. I'm extremely happy with my 95. Mine has 121k miles, all of the service records and I swear it drives like it has 40k miles on it. No rattles, solid brakes, no suspension noises, transmission is quiet and shifts without an issue, great clutch, no exhaust leaks, smooth engine. All I had to do was replace my knock sensor and the knock sensor sub harness.

My 99 had a dead coil when i bought it. Cost $900 for a factory tune up w/coil repair. Follow unixadm's list of concerns.
