what on earth is this Bull-s**T

took my car in for an oil leak problem. Some mechanic tells me is the oil sender unit. Replaced that, the oil was still leaking. Took it to holts mufflers autoshop. They said it was the oil pan leaking from the side. Supposedly fix it with $300. Still leaking. Take it to Midas. They said it was the oil pan, YES AGAIN. Pay $300 to fix it. STILL LEAKING. Take it back to MIdas they said that timing chain cover was leaking and to fix that (140 000 miles on my car)i had to replace timing chain, tensioners and all soughts of gears. Cost = $2000. apart from that fact it took them 5days to fix. Got car back yesterday. Guess what, OIL STILL LEAKING. call them up today and they are telling me to bring the car back in. WTF!!!!?!!! Is this just a bad omen or these guys don't know what they are doing. HELP. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think most here will agree that unless you know the mechanics at the Midas you are going too, you can safely assume that they mostly talk out of their ***.

Any reason why you took your car with an oil leak problem to a muffler shop (Holts or Midas or whatever)? I wouldn't trust very many shops to do work on the VQ engine - especially when it comes to the timing chain etc.

Your best bet is to take it to the dealer, have them at least diagnose the problem. If the price they quote is too high, pay them their 100 bucks and walk out and have it fixed by a COMPETENT shop (i.e. nowhere you have already been).

The guys you have been to obviously don't know what they are doing - and you've basically spent 2600 bucks to find that out. I would definitely be on their case trying to get my money back...

yea why the f*ck are u going to a muffler shop? secondly, how far apart in time have u been going to these shops, if it hasnt been too long i would have went back to the first shop for free until they fixed the problem u originally paid them for. Thirdly, after this problem gave u issues twice and still couldnt be fixed i would have been posted the question up here or go to a dealer. Sorry cats are trying to rape u in the real world, i hope your problem gets fixed but dont go to midas or meineke, etc. for engine problems.

Also for that kind of money you could have bought a new (used) engine with very low miles and had it put it and probably have even saved some money...live and learn I guess. Next time check here before having major repairs like this done, there's alot of experience here on the org. As stated above, don't go to those chain places. Find a good independent shop.

Sounds like the leak I have. Its actually coming from the back of the block and seeping onto the bottom of the oil pan and oil sending unit and onto the control arms. I took a look at it and it looks like its coming from behind the axle on a part of the block called the oil pump housing. I havent been able to fix it because to do so you have to take out the passengers side axle, cross member and bottom half of the block... I know of a few people that have had this problem.

Do what I would do, take it to the dealer to get it diagnosed. They'll tell you where it is leaking at more or less. Then take your car to a reputable shop that will do the work for way less. Muffler shops, brake shops, whatever other shops there are that don't deal with engines will just see the opportunity to screw you over. Sorry it happened to you though. I wish you had researched the problem or at least posted your symptoms in the forum first before you dove in on all that expense and now w/o much to show for.

How come you never went back to the same place you went the first time, obviously they didn't fixed it, you should have gone back and demanded they either fix it or give you the money back.

What the hell...$300 to re-seal the oil pan!!!! I did that with quarter of a $3 tube of silicone in under 1 hour. Changing the chain, tensioners and gears was a good waste of money...they probably din even change it and you paid for it. I just took off my timing chain cover and the tensioner, chains and gears were like brand new.
Here's what you do, remove the right side front wheel and the plastic shield that is blocking the oil pan and crankshaft pulley. Get some degreaser or detergent and spray out the area around the oil pan and crankshaft pulley and let the area dry. Drive the car or run the engine for a while and then examine the area that you washed for oil. If the source of the oil seems to be coming from behind the crankshaft pulley then you just have to change the crankshaft oil seal. I'm averaging about a 1-2 hour job with the seal costing only about $10. That is most likely the source of your oil leak.
I only hope those thieves sealed the timing cover properly when they were re-installing it, otherwise you may have new leaks to worry about. Go make some noise and at least get back some of your money.

you are an idiot for the following reasons:

1) you take the car to the fire department instead of a mechanic shop
2) you pay them to fix the problem, they dont fix the problem and you dont go back.
3) once again you go back to the fire department to get it fixed instead of going to the same mechanic, yelling at him for a refund or actually fixing it.
4) same as 3
5) same as 4
6) same as 6

dude where do you go when you have a headache? to post office?

when are you going to learn that chained stores are like virgin 45 year old men waiting to **** jenna jameson

I have seen quite a few 4th gen maximas with this problem. This is the front timing cover or sometimes the rear timing cover.

Why didn't you take the car to Nissan in the first place? I bet you think the dealer is too expensive, but at least it gets fixed right the first time. If for some reason it's not, it's guaranteed. Now, you can total up the money to see how much you didn't "save". Midas is where the mechanic flunkies work, and you get what you pay for. Just find one dealership you can establish a relationship with, and go to them.
